Quest 3 controller : Trigger sensor is very sensitive since firmware update 1.9.2

Hello

I had this problem happen to me since the Quest 3 touch plus controller firmware update to 1.9.2 I did on November 12. Before that, I didn't notice a problem with them.

Since the update the presence of my fingers are not tracked properly on the trigger especially if I move my finger up or down across the button. It will think I am not touching the trigger while my finger is still resting on it. I have to almost be perfectly centered on the button and try my best not to move it while doing my hand gestures or it will think my finger is not touching it.

I already contacted the support team and they sent me replacement controllers with the same issue.

I hope Meta is reading this so they can notice the regression since 1.9.2 and make an update soon.

I managed to get an update from our internal team, and it looks like the best course of action here would be to submit a bug report so that they can get a more in-depth look. Along with that, I'd suggest testing out the below troubleshooting:

  1. Clean the controller
    • You can also use compressed air to remove any debris inside the controller
  2. Remove any unsupported third-party accessories that may affect button movement or controller detection (such as controller covers, controller attachments, etc.)
  3. Remove the battery from the controller for at least 30 seconds
  4. Unpair and pair again the controller to the headset

Apart from this, I'd recommend keeping in touch with the support team. If you're having some trouble with the email team, you can always reach out to @MetaQuestSupport through PM for them to look into your support ticket.

Hey @Surfingpuppy! This is a pretty strange thing to see you experience, and I'm thinking it could be related to this issue/thread here

Just to make sure and have a firsthand look, could you provide a video of what you're seeing with your triggers?

Along with that, could you please list out any troubleshooting you've already tried as well?

I look forward to working with you!

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I'm unable to provide a video right now... it might take a while before i get back to my Quest 3

But if you just take a quest 3 controller, go in the quest home and move your index finger vertically on the trigger, you might be able to see what i'm talking about. You'll see the index finger of the 3d hand model holding the controller randomly positioning itself on the trigger and sometimes lift up. I would also need to barely lift the tip of my finger for the sensor to think i'm not touching the trigger anymore, while the vast majority of my finger is still resting on it.

It's as if it was trying to track where the tip of my finger is on the trigger (I don'T know why a controller would need this by the way). As if something experimental was introduced in the update.

The troubleshooting I already tried :

- Re-pair the controllers

- Removing the batteries and waiting 15 minutes before putting them back

- Change batteries multiple times (both rechargeable and not)

- "Factory reset" the controllers. I was told this one can be done by holding the A or X button and taping 5 times the home or oculus button on the controllers and it didn't factory reset (support as been dodging the question when I asked why this doesn't work).

- Factory reset the headset.

- One whole RMA process without any changes.

It also seems i'm not the only one experience finicky tracking of the trigger sensor. There seems to be a small amount of people affected by it on reddit and VRchat's discord. Here's the reddit link :

What I would love, is a way to either go back to the old firmware on the controllers without being forced to update of the option to tweak the sensors. I hope you can look into this !

Ah and I forgot to mention that while the issue you linked is indeed related by the fact that controllers are involved, it's pretty much the opposite. I have sensors that are too sensitive on the triggers of my quest 3 controllers while the other thread has sensors that are stuck thinking the buttons is touched on the Quest pro controllers. Not much I can gleam from that unfortunately.

Here are two videos of the issue. It's hard to see my fingers because of the 3d models, but you can see that the sensors will move around a lot while i'm just moving them up and down and sometimes will think they're lifted.

I've actually been having the exact same issue. I'm starting to think it's definitely an issue with the new update rather than a hardware issue.

Hello again,

I hope someone is still reading this. I was hopping to get news after so many days...

Anyway, I got hold of some brand new Quest pro controllers and it's worse with them ! Not only are they being just as bad with the trigger sensor, they sometime think I'm touching the trigger while I'm not now, just like the other post.

Here's a nice video clearly showing it :

After this, I hope you guys can notice an issue and fix it because I will not be using a Quest 3 if that's what I have to deal with. I'll look for a complete refund for defective hardware if there's no fixes.

Could it be a headset issue ? I already tried a factory reset and nothing changed on the Quest 3 controllers.

This headset is also a pre-order I got on day one when the pre-orders where opened , so it could be a first batch issue (explaining why it's not affecting everyone) ?

Info about the headset software are in the screenshot :

Please let me know of any updates, I'm open to give info and try different fixes if needed.

Thanks for providing these videos!

[NOT A SOLUTION] - Just marking this as the solution for visibility, this is not resolved.

I'd love to have the team get a deeper dive into here, so could everyone please provide me with the following if not already:

  1. What's the full version number of your headset? (59.0.0.####### or likewise)
    1. Quick Settings > System > Software Update
  2. What's the current firmware version of your controllers?
  3. What version is your Meta Quest app running?
  4. Are you in the Quest PTC?
  5. Any potential workarounds?

    1. Quick Settings > System > Software Update
      1. It's literally in the screenshot i provided but i guess i can write it here... 59.0.0.172.706.535429038

  1. What's the current firmware version of your controllers?
    1. Quest 3 touch plus controllers : 1.9.2
    2. Quest pro controllers: 1.32.2

  1. What version is your Meta Quest app running?
    1. Where can I check this ? It's probably on the screenshot already, please check

  1. Are you in the Quest PTC?
    1. No

  1. Any potential workarounds?
    1. Nope, i would immediately post a workaround if I found one. Trust me, i'm really bothered by this problem just like everyone else.

Cheers,

Thanks for getting the information over. I've gone ahead and sent it up to the right people.

As for the app version, that should be at the bottom of the Menu tab. (i.e mine states version 241.0.0.5.118 at the moment)
