Hi there,
The Quest 3 over link only ever loses charge. It does not charge like the quest 1, hold charge like the quest 2, it literally only loses charge. When I do beat saber sessions over link I get a maximum of 2 and a half hours of gametime. This is unacceptable.
This was tested over several headsets on several cables, official and third party, and PC's.
Is it possible to add a mode that charges the headset during link, or has better management between power and battery loss? Thanks.

Hi @Denyah_
Unfortunately it sounds like the amount of power your USB port can supply to the Quest 3 isn't enough. The Quest 3 pulls about 18w and I think the most you can get out of a standard motherboard 3.1/3.2 port is about 15w. People on reddit have found that if you fully charge the headset before you use link, you can get up to 6 hours in total.
Alternatively you could use wireless link combined with either the elite battery strap (this is how I do it) or a power bank that outputs at least 18w (9volts 2amps) of power. This seems to be enough for the Quest 3 to hold its charge.
Hope this helps
Jonny

Hi there,
I'm using a cable that connects to mains as well as connects via USB. It (total) is about 30 watts of power, yet I am still losing charge. Using a SS10 3.2 port, I am still losing charge on a top end ROG Strix motherboard.
For the level of beat saber that I play at, wireless airlink has too much delay even over WiFi 6E. The response time needs to be below 3ish ms, until after that hitting maps at high star levels becomes near impossible.
The headset is always fully charged before I play.
Thanks!

Looking into this a little deeper, it seems usb C to C cables can provide up to 60w of power. However, this will likely require you to buy a PCIe card as your motherboard is unlikely to supply any more power than your standard USB ports.
You can get Thunderbolt PCIe cards that would give you enough power headroom to keep it charged (I believe you would have to be on intel as AMD isn't compatible with thunderbolt)
People have tried using dejunct cables that plug into the wall and into your PC for link but haven't got it working 100%, some rumours say it can damage the battery so I would tread carefully using that,

Sadly even using these PCIE Thunderbolt cards, the headset still has woeful power management and still refuses for the heads

Hello there, @Denyah_ , and thank you for reaching out to us with this issue! Playtime is always at a premium when working with battery-driven devices, and we know how every minute can be precious. What you are experiencing is, as @J40NYR has pointed out in wonderful detail, a limitation of the power output of the port hardware on the computer meeting the power requirements of the Quest 3 when it is in use: the port simply cannot provide enough power to offset what is being utilized by the headset to operate, especially when that operations is at a high level of performance in games like Beat Saber. You can somewhat get around this with the Elite Strap with Battery and using a wireless connection, however if you are looking for that quick of a response window (3ms), you are correct in thinking that even 6ghz might not be fast enough, at least at this time. We would not recommend any solution that requires you to have a split cable with separated power as @J40NYR mentioned due to potential issues with supplying too much power and causing damage to your Quest 3.
Hopefully this helps explain things, and that WIFI technology advances for even faster throughput on 6ghz networks in the future!

how much Power does the Quest 3 need from the PC? Which standart is supported? Power Delivery? Thunderbolt?

Hey there, @Zourak, and thanks for reaching out about this! The Link connection, especially for the Quest Pro and Quest 3, is primarily for data transfer, and will supply the headset with little to no power, especially while in use. This is one of the reasons why we recommend that Quest devices be charged directly and not attempt to use a computer or USB hub when troubleshooting power issues. If you are looking for an extended experience, the Elite Strap with battery is an excellent option to extend your playtime, We also responded to your other post on this issue, and we hope our responses help to clear things up for you! Please let us know if you have any additional questions, now or in the future, we are happy to assist!

To clarify, you are saying there is no way to have decent play time while using link?
Also, you said: "the port simply cannot provide enough power to offset what is being utilized by the headset to operate, especially when that operations is at a high level of performance in games like Beat Saber."
Yet, when playing through wireless (which arguably will use even more power) you can get even more play time using a battery. So the port on the headset can handle the power.
So why doesn't meta make a proper split cable solution for this that wont damage the battery?
