Quest link cable lets me view files in file explorer, but wont connect to quest link

I bought this cable: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/link-cable-for-oculus-quest-1-2-usb-type-c-10-feet-usb-3-2-axge...

It charges the headset and allows me to access my Quest 2 files in windows file explorer.

When I plug it into the headset I get a notification on the headset saying "click on this notification to allow connected device to access files"

When I click on that notification I'm able to see the device and all it's files on file explorer.

Even though my pc can access these files it still does not connect to the quest link application

I disabled USB power saving settings and USB selective suspend settings, but that didn't fix anything

Hey there @gamekickr! Thank you so much for reaching out to us! Based on what you've told us, we'd like to ask you a few questions to better determine troubleshooting steps.

  • Have you ever had this issue with the original cable?
  • Is the issue consistent or does it switch from allowing you to not allowing you?
  • What type of troubleshooting have you done already?

We appreciate you taking the time to get this over to us, looking forward to your response!

This is the first link cable I've owned.

Every time I plug my quest 2 into my pc using the link cable, I get a notification on the headset prompting me to allow access (despite having USB link auto-connect enabled in developer settings), I click on the notification to allow, and then I'm able to access the quest 2 files using windows file explorer. I tested and can confirm I am able to transfer files to and from the headset; therefore, this cable is definitely capable of data transfer.

I tried enabling developer mode, which didn't help.

I tried every single USB port on my PC, which didn't make a difference.

I disabled USB power saving settings and USB selective suspend settings, but that didn't fix anything

I've also restarted my headset multiple times.

I should also mention that air link is not an option for me. I live in student housing, and everyone uses the same Wi-Fi; I don't have access to the router and cannot make any changes to the router settings that would allow me to connect my headset wirelessly to my PC.

Looking over all of your troubleshooting in this case, the main thing we want to check for is that you are plugging the cable into a USB 3.0 or higher USB device on your computer. The error in your screenshot does mention that is likely the case, so that will be the first thing you want to try. Keep in mind not all USB slots on computers will all be 3.0 or higher, which you can use this link to double check on your device.

If this does not work, we recommend trying to connect your device with an official link cable, to make sure this is not an issue with the cable itself.

@gamekickr  What are your PC specs (cpu/gpu and laptop or desktop?).  Pretty hard to offer advice without adding this basic info imho.  When I occasionally don't get the proper Link connection I find that disconecting my headset usb connector, then re-seating it.  This often helps give me the Link notification and allows me to startup Link.

If you still cannot get it to connect properly I suggest you contact meta support and start a support ticket, including your log files.  They may be able to identify the cause(s) of your issue.  Good luck mate and cheers,

I've tried multiple USB 3.0 ports on my PC, no change. So you're saying I have to buy another cable? what makes the official cable any different? I'm just wondering since the cable that I bought is capable of data transfer... Is yours capable of some advanced data transfer tech? The cable I bought is capable of USB 3.0 (5Gbps) transfer speeds. I don't see how buying your cable would make any difference except line your pockets and leave me with another cable I have no use for.

3080 TI, i7 12600K, 32 GB DDR5 DESKTOP, which is very vr capable. I've tried reseating both ends of the cable.
