Hi!
I recently bought a Quest 3 and I'm really happy with it. However, I wish I could use it for longer sessions, as the battery only lasts about two hours. I've done some research, and according to Meta's official FAQ, they don't recommend charging the Quest while using it. At the same time, Meta sells the Elite Strap with a built-in battery that charges the headset during use, which seems to send mixed messages about how to prolong the internal battery life.
I'm also curious if there's any official documentation confirming something I've seen online—that the Elite Strap with Battery bypasses the internal battery and only uses the external one. This would help me decide whether it's worth buying the official Meta Elite Strap with Battery to avoid damaging the internal battery, or if other third-party battery options offer the same benefit.
Thank you!

Hey, @XND! Welcome to the forums!
I'll let others provide their opinions on third-party accessories (@oculusness - This might be a post for you to jump in on!) but I'd love to provide some information on the Elite Strap with Battery for you!
In short, it doesn't charge the headset. When connected and plugged in to an outlet, the headset will charge first and then the strap. When in use, the headset will use the strap's battery first, then it's own. The battery charge level displayed is an average of both batteries.
In certain situations (i.e. when running particularly demanding applications) your headset will pull power from both batteries simultaneously but for the most part, yes, what you've seen online is correct and the internal battery is bypassed until it's empty.
I'm sorry for such a wordy response there and but I hope I answered everything!
Don't be afraid to ask if you have any other questions!

@XND @OMOTO unfortunately, this is a bit of a can of worms depending on the current of the charger or battery connected to the headset or battery headstrap, or the make / model of the battery headstrap.
Ideally, you only want to charge the headset battery up to 80% and discharge it to 20% to prolong the life of the LiPo headset battery. Most headstrap/battery packs are Li/ion cells that do not suffer the same charging restrictions.
If the battery or charger can provide enough current to power the headset at its maximum power usage then all the energy will go to the headset first and then charge any connected headstrap battery. If the the power of the battery or charger is not powerful enough to supply the headset at max power usage, then the headset battery and headstrap battery will also be used keep the headset supplied until the batteries are depleted.
The official elite strap batteries are currently the only ones that show up in the headset, enabling the user to monitor the battery usage. Ultimately the internal headset battery is not going to last several years, so a battery pack is always going to be an option. There are things you can do to prolong the life of the internal headset battery, but these can be replaced as well.

Thank you both for your detailed responses! It sounds like the official Quest Elite Strap with Battery is indeed the best option for battery longevity, primarily because it manages power distribution more effectively compared to third-party options, which seem to act more like standard chargers for the internal battery.
I also hope Meta considers implementing a charge limiter toggle, perhaps to stop charging at 80% for improved battery health. This feature would be incredibly valuable for users focused on device longevity. Knowing the headset’s battery can stay healthy, regardless of charging methods or accessories, would offer peace of mind and a more consistent experience for everyone. It would be awesome if the Quest could also be used while direcly charging via a PD compatible Charger with the 80% limit so that one could use the Quest always conected if necessary, even to an external battery pack without the risk of degrading the internal battery.
Thanks again for your insights—it’s much appreciated!
