Question on 3 camera setup: Why not a triangle?

Just curious why the optimum setup for the oculus rift 3 camera setup wouldn't be a triangle, trying to be as equidistant and even with all 3 angles as possible.  The current recommended setup is two in front just ever-so-slightly toed-in, and the third camera off to one side or the other, angled towards the position of the user (I believe).  That seems...........odd.  Anyone know why this is, and can a 4th camera be added for full coverage?

Also,  the cameras can be 10 to 14 feet apart, correct?  I think that's within the 3 meter optimum range or at least getting to the high end of it, correct?

Thank Ye.

Recommended setup wasn't the right set up for me. I'don't recommend setting up 3 in the corner of your room pointed toward the centre at just under head height.

In fairness I have one corner where right on the corner l facing it I get occlusion for my touches. But that'should because I  literally blocking all cameras with my body. Camera number 4 may be on the cards lol

There are many others like it, but this is mine.

It's because of the camera FOV; think of it like a cone or pyramid shape with the tip of the cone being where your camera is at growing wider the further out you move from the camera.

Placing them in a sort of equilateral triangle configuration means you aren't really maximizing the camera FOV. IN order to do so, you would have to move one of the cameras farther out making a sort of isosceles triangle; however, this would also mean you are moving one of the cameras out of optimal coverage range.

Personally, I have my setup in a right triangle with all cameras about 2.4m high, angled about 45 degrees down, two are pointed pretty much directly at the center of the play area and one is just slightly offset from the center (just a bit towards the direction of the corner without a camera).

Angles and heights have to be adjusted for your play area size though; a larger play area would need to be slightly lower and at an angle slightly closer to parallel to the floor. You kind of have to optimize to your personal circumstances.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm waiting on my third sensor to arrive and then I'll play with the setup.  Looks like I'm going to need to do some trial-and-error on the overall 3 sensor setup, right now the 2 sensor setup is annoying enough.....it keeps asking me to move the sensors closer together.

Right now they are at the edge of my desk about 5 feet apart, any further and I throw an error during setup.
Can I toe the sensors in more to provide more coverage or is there something else that might be throwing this off, with 2 sensors I thought you could have these things like maybe 10 feet apart and toed-in to give you more room to move around......no?

I have mine farther apart (it gave me the warning too, I pushed skip and set up guardian, you can see any hiccups live - the controllers blip for you on the monitor) and my tracking is fairly decent, a few hiccups now and then, but it's fairly solid. One up high pointing down, one behind me around nipple level, facing straight at me. This setup was super lazy. (in fact I have a plush monkey's hand under one sensor stand leaning it a bit forward to get a slightly lower angle  ) Of course, you may have to try different positions and check for hiccups while setting up guardian to find your own sweet spot.

I had no idea you could skip-past that warning and move right to setting up the guardian perimeter.  Thanks, I'm off to re-position!
