Resolved - Quest Airlink lags and stutters after V54 update.

Been using Quest pro with airlink for 4 months now without any issues whatsoever.

After the headset was updated to V54 I'm having headset lag/connection issues on airlink.

Screen is stuttery at times when moving in my playspace or moving my head, the image gets laggy, choppy and black frames appear on the side of the screen oposite to where I'm moving my head.

Image quality has degraded significantly with lots of "artifacts".

This makes casual games like VR chat hard to play due to constant lag and stutter, games like Beat Saber are impossible to play.

I havent changed a single thing in my playspace nor my setup, router config is the same as when it was working, PC is the same, no update has been applied to any of this. 

Any advice would be much appreciated as Im lost on what to do.

Specs 

CPU I9 12900k

32GB Ram

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080TI

Router: TP-link AX1500 Wifi 6 dedicated just to the headset.

For me the problem is the same using Quest Link or Air Link. It used to work fine on both.

This thread is 40 pages long so maybe this has all been said but just in case, ive been doing as much testing as I can and have tracked this down in my case to a resolution issue.  

Im Using ALXR as a test since it does it the worst and have found a few things:

-Disabling Foviated rendering solves the issue

-The sparkles coinside with a spike in client render idle time if that make sence.

-Reducing the resolution down to exactly the base 3663x1920 resolution of the headset fixes the problem even with foviated on

-Sideloading v55 on top of the current install fixes it for a short time (a game session usualy about and hour) and then it comes back and or comes back if the headset reboots.

-Movement triggers the stuttder and sparkles when Foviated is on.

-The problem scales as you go up in resolution

-The problem was not pressent in v51 (note: there was an off and on issue over previous relases that caused sparkles in the right side of the screen but no where near as bad)

-The problem almost always appears worse and originates from the right side

My amature brain tells me the issue has to do with resolution scaling.  Now i dont know if that a symptom or a cause, but I do know that anything over the base resolution of the headset causes issues and as foviated moves around theres issues as the resolution changes.

 

Just hoping this helps add to the puzzle for the devs

The problem has been fixed on my end.

This might not fix it for everyone, but it might for some of you: it seems there was a router update on some routers that entirely scuffed up wireless streaming. if possible, roll back your router firmware to an earlier version. I got mine fixed by taking it to my ISP's office not too far from her and poof. Freezing is gone. It was a bad router firmware update all along.

Here's what happened, followed by a test you can do to see if it is your router: Every 15 minutes (use a stopwatch to count down) the freeze happened, so I could time when it happened on my watch.
when I restarted my pc, the time still stayed consistant. For example, in my testing I would always freeze at the 8, 23, 38 and 53 minute marks, even if my pc or headset was restarted. that's how I knew it was neither my Pc nor the headset, so do that experiment.

Test method: Take the time when your VR freezes or stutters. add 15 minutes to it. that is the time it will stutter or freeze again.
restart both your PC AND your headset after 5 minutes of the first stutter/freeze. If the stutter happens on your predicted time, 15 minutes after the first stutter, it is your router. If the stutter happens at a different time, it is your pc or headset.

Thanks for sharing. For me this is not a router issue though. The stutters occur also when using Meta Link running single player PCVR content (both Oculus PCVR and SteamVR).

For most of us this is definitely not just a router firmware problem. This is a bloody headset firmware problem - it started occuring with v54 and it occurs whenever I try Air Link through my router, through AirBridge or through laptop wi-fi. And even if it might seem fixed at some moment - it comes back after headset restart ot just the next day.

I fixed it with the oculus debug tool.. I put everything on default.. Bitrate to 0, and now airlink is working again, how it should.. 

before that I reinstalled oculus, and deleted all oculus folders. 

Could you please share which Oculus App version on Windows you are using and which OS version on the Quest headset? Are you using the Quest 2?

Last night only my headset finally updated to V55. Played about an hour of PCVR on VD and seems 90% of the stutter is gone (in frequency and severity), but still some micro stutters (and with the stats open I can see it's still network latency spikes).

Updates should be redone. We should be able to pause updates, and force update to the current version (stuff the stupid rollout nonsense).

PTC is not a proper solution for these kinds of situations as that has the same forced update and rollout nonsense and when you want to go to stable you gotta wipe your headset.

to make it a proper usable device though we should be able to rollback. Even if it requires loading firmware on a flashstick and popping it in on bootup. If I can do it with my android there is no reason I can't do it with this and googling shows people use to do this back int he day. If Meta would host and share the last 2 or 3 versions that were stable and give official support for this that would go a LONG way, and something tells me they already use these tools internally so wouldn't be that hard to do.

Edit: 2 days later. Seems it is very temperamental. Occasionally it will be about as bad as it was before, other times it is fine for almost an hour. So basically it is still borked.
