Rift audio output issues after GPU upgrade

Upgraded my 1650 to a 4070 Ti Super.  Now I can't get audio in either ear.  It did work briefly in the left ear but steam dcs became laggy and froze.  After that, not even static audio.  I've tried different usb and hdmi ports, reinstalled Meta, usb and video drivers.  I'm not sure what nvidia driver I had before, but now I'm using the latest, 552.22.   I have all the appropriate output selection boxes ticked.  From the win 11 audio settings, I can set the Rift audio as the default and see the visual indicator rise and fall when I "test" the audio, but still no sound.  All volume controls are at max.

I think it's probably a software issue but I would like to rule out a hardware problem as I just spent $900 on the gpu and if it needs to go back, sooner would be better.  I don't think it's the gpu as the hdmi works fine on my tv.  Is there a way to test the speakers on the HMD?  I know it's an old HMD, but after purchasing the gpu, I need to wait a bit before investing in a new one.

Hi @cher.283010! We understand that you're having Rift audio issues and we'd love to take a look at this with you. We do have a few questions that we'd like to start with so that we can better pinpoint the issue.

  1. Does it happen with all the applications, or is it limited to a specific program?
  2. Does it change wherever you move?
  3. Does it happen while you are inside or outside Oculus Home?
  4. Does another Audio device (Speaker, Headphone, or Microphone) work?

We will be looking forward to your reply!

Hi, thanks.

No sound ever.  Doesn't matter what I do.  Just since upgrading the GPU.  It worked fine last week with the old GPU.  I cannot even change windows audio output settings to the Rift and no youtube video sound or anything.  The Rift video works when I run a game, whether from Meta Home or SteamVR.  However, if I am using Steam for OpenXR, the audio mirroring will work so I can use my bluetooth earbuds for sound from the computer (no sound in the HMD) and the game will play normally otherwise.  I don't think mirroring works through the Meta OpenXR, but I'm not certain about that.

Thanks for the swift reply, @cher.283010! We have some troubleshooting steps in mind that have been known to fix this sort of issue for other users, which may be worth trying out if you haven't already. When you get the chance, please go through the following and let us know if anything changes:

  • Check the PC Oculus app settings to make sure your Rift / Rift S is selected as the audio source:
    1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
    2. Select Devices in the left menu and then click Rift / Rift S.
    3. Below Audio, check to make sure Rift / Rift S Headset is selected and that the audio slider is not muted, or set all the way to the left.
  • Check to make sure the sound of your computer is turned up and not set to 0.
  • Check to see if there’s any updates for your Rift / Rift S:
    1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.
    2. Select Library in the left menu and then click Updates to check for updates.
  • Re-seat the Rift / Rift S cable.
  • [Rift] Re-seat headphones.
  • [Rift S] Re-seat the audio connector under the facial interface.
  • Try another USB 3.0 port.
  • Restart your computer.

Take all the time you need with that and get back to us when you can!

Apologies for taking so long to get back.  I've been away from home.  No, the problem has not been fixed.  I have tried your previous suggestions below:

Hey again @cher.283010! No worries, we understand that life happens. We have a few more ideas that could help you out and get the audio going. Please review and test the following steps:

  • Repair the Meta Quest Link PC application by running the installer again, and selecting the "repair" option.
  • Double-check that your motherboard drivers are all up to date to properly support the new hardware and proper audio drivers.
  • Ensure that all "Oculus Virtual Audio Devices" are working:
    • Try expanding the output settings at the top of the Win 11 sound settings menu and make sure the volume is set for both the left and right options.
    • Check in "All sound devices" near the button in the advanced section.
    • And review everything you can in the "More sound settings" under the advanced section as well.
  • Review the cable ends to make sure there are no bent pins in any way.
    • Also, did you reseat the cable from the headset itself or just your PC? You can reseat the cable from the headset by removing the facial interface.

If you need assistance with any of these suggestions or if you continue to have issues, please let us know. We would love to give you the steps needed to fully and manually uninstall the program files and any saved settings. This way you can reinstall the Meta Quest Link PC software brand new to ensure everything is set up with your new hardware. We look forward to hearing back from you soon!
