Rift not working on a GTX 1050 Ti (Dell Inspiron 7000 Gaming)

Hello, my name is Daniel.

I would like to know why the rift cant show the image inside my headset using my laptop. It can detect everything (sensors, touch controllers and etc...). I can even hear the audio in the headset, but I get a black screen on it. I can see the application working on the monitor, but nothing on the headset's display. It is a driver issue? I'm using the lastest drivers from NVidia.

My laptop spec is:

Operating System
Windows 10 Home 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i5 - 7 gen
RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel
Graphics
Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1080@60Hz)
Intel HD Graphics 630 (Dell)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (Dell)
Storage
238GB SanDisk X400 M.2 2280 256GB (SSD)
931GB Seagate ST1000LM048-2E7172 (SATA)

The fact that the Graphics mentions "Intel HD Graphics 630 (Dell)" and this is a laptop makes me think that the card you have in there is a GTX 1050m and the m portion means that instead of having it's own HDMI out, it uses the Integrated gfx port and that is not compatible with the rift.  Maybe I'm wrong, this laptop appears to be very new.  Someone else with more knowledge will chime in and either agree with me or set me straight  🙂

The 10-series GTX models are actually quite interesting in the fact that no "m" model is needed due to their higher efficiency with their power draw (iirc). And for sites that do list the 10 series as having a mobile model and a desktop model, if you delve deeper, you will see that the only difference is clock speeds and the physical size of the hardware.

But @falken76 is on to something with the single HDMI out port, as since it is a laptop, drivers will decide whether to run the integrated graphics or the discrete graphics for whatever is plugged into the HDMI out. Try going into the NVidia control panel and seeing if there's an option to always use your 1050 Ti, instead of having the computer decide on its own (since I do not own a laptop like this, I don't know if the setting is in the control panel, or somewhere else, so you may have to do some digging around for it, but it should be there somewhere!)

You should also open up a support ticket with Oculus @ https://support.oculus.com/
There they can better help you troubleshoot. Laptops have been very hit or miss with the Rift (sadly), even ones that are supposedly VR ready.

Just like what falken76 said though, someone chime in and correct me if I'm wrong 🙂

It could be that the lcd monitor is using the hdmi part of the video output. Don't know how you could change that outside of disabling the intel graphics.

Friend of mine ran into this exact issue and that was the diagnosis - the LCD was using the GTX but the external port used only the Intel chip.  There was no option to change that.  The rift would not work with that laptop - an ASUS gaming laptop even.  He ended up having to buy a VR-ready PC.

I’m having the same EXACT issue and I have the same laptop as you do as well! I figured out how you can use the laptop for VR....temporarily. Right now it’s been working on and off and I can’t use it properly. But you have to go to control panel, under devices, turn off your intel graphics card, leaving the laptop no choice but to use the 1050Ti. This sort of works but keeps on glitching out. And that’s what I’m confused about, since everything should run smoothly.

I have a suggestion which might probably address the issue and hope someone can post some feedback. I do not have the Oculus rift and have only tested the behaviour of my HDMI port on my Dell Inspiron 7577 with the 1050Ti connected to my Samsung Television. If you right click on the Desktop select Nvidia control panel. It gives a drop down box with three options viz Default, integrated and high performanceGPU. If the setting is on default and you play a AAA game it may not display on the television or it may blank out both displays. This is my observation. Change this setting to high performance Nvidia GPU. Click on appy then retry using the Oculus rift and see if this resolves the issue.
