[SOLVED-ish] BSODs when exiting many demos/programs

On /r/oculus, cybereality suggested I post dumps from the few BSODs I've had since testing the DK2 over the past week or so. Not looking for help on any particular issue, just under the impression that this is the place to submit bugs for reference and tickets.

Honestly I don't remember specifically what I was doing when the crashes occurred so it may not be much help. Typically it happened when closing Rift demos but unfortunately I can't specify which ones (since I wasn't paying a load of attention and was frankly expecting crashes this early on).

[UPDATE]

After the 0.4.1 update I was really getting these issues a lot and had some time to dig. Opened the dump in WinDbg and saw that in addition to problems with RiftEnabler, I was seeing mentions of VirtuWDDM.sys. Looks like there's a "feature" that came with my ASUS mobo (that I never actually set up properly and thought was disabled) called Lucid Virtu MVP. Supposedly it lets you leverage your integrated GPU for some tasks even if you are using a dedicated PCI-E GPU. There was nothing to uninstall but I was able to go into BIOS and set the PCI-E GPU as primary (instead of auto), disable a couple of things that supposedly get offloaded to the iGPU, and booted back up.

Now I can run Riftmax and the "full" Tuscany demo without any BSODs so far. Before I was getting them constantly whenever exiting apps. Gonna head to bed so I'll need to test more tomorrow. So far many things seem to be working better.

Tuscany seems locked to 60fps in extended (even if I put my main monitor at 75hz and keep vsync forced). Direct mode is still a no-go but I gather that is fairly typical at the moment (black screen). But if I use Win-P to use only the Rift, Tuscany now hits 75fps pretty solid. There's a bit of smearing but it's not the problem I had been running into before with some smear+low FPS.

Definitely going to check out some of the others that crashed but so far I've been running things that were almost guaranteed to BSOD before.

TL;DR: If you have an ASUS or other motherboard with Lucidlogix Virtu integration (or not), make sure you disable anything to do with the iGPU in your BIOS. Seems it was causing issues even with nothing plugged into the iGPU or even seeing it enabled anywhere in Windows.

Awesome. Just fired it up again (after uninstalling the VJoy virtual joystick driver just in case that was doing anything funny but the same thing happened on exit (Direct Mode, direct to rift). If this is just more info about a known issue I'll be glad to stop posting dumps 😉 Otherwise I'll just post them in this thread.

Thanks for posting! This pointed me in the right direction for my similar issue.

Problem:
Most all demos created in unity with a direct_to_rift.exe caused me to BSOD upon exit.

Resolution:
Disabling virtu mvp in BIOS and uninstalling the tool from my box fixed the problem.

basic system info:
CPU i7 3770
NVIDIA gtx660
MB: asrock z77 extreme4
rift model: DK2

Thanks for slogging through this. It turns out that there is some low-distribution software that interferes with our render shims. We'll add this to the list and get one of these mobos to work on after some of the higher-priority problems are ironed out.

Best,
Chris
