I also tried a reinstall which was a challenge. Finally got back to adding VR apps. It downloads others but chokes on Oculus Media Plugin. Seems like somebody pushed a bad file to Prod, hope they fix it soon. My GearVR is currently bricked.
hay, I found a solution that worked for me. You need to delete all files and cache from Gear VR. then Download oculus media plug and gear vr system as apk from the internet (apk mirror). Then first install the Gear VR system, put the cell phone in the VR glasses and take it out again. The app opens automatically and then install the media plug.
