Setting up oculus rift - code exit 18

Hi,

I know there are already similar threads but none worked for me and most are either too general to offer a solution or dead.
So I just got oculus rift and went on to install, the software, which failed (the generis not very useful 'Sorry, a problem occured'.
Here is, probably, the root of my problem, in OVRLibrarian.log :
(in the OcculusSetup.log, it is at the step of installing oculus-runtime but then fails with exit code 18, proceeding to uninstall)

[Debug] [15/12/2018 15:31:39] Starting up OVRLibrarian v1.16.0.0.
[Debug] [15/12/2018 15:31:39] Invoking service 'OVRLibraryService' with arguments [install-package, C:\OculusSetup-DownloadCache\oculus-runtime.zip, C:\OculusSetup-DownloadCache\oculus-runtime.zip.sig].
[Debug] [15/12/2018 15:31:39] Service 'OVRLibraryService' exited with code 1066+18.
[Debug] [15/12/2018 15:31:39] Exiting with code 18.

I checked and error 1066 means 'service specific' error while error 18 means 'there is no more file' (whatever that means)

In windows event when trying to install oculus, it tells me that Oculus VR Library Service stopped because 'there is no more file.', so it's at least consistent...

I'm not sure how revelant it is to my problem, but I checked in with gpedit in User Right Granting that there was nothing in 'Disallow logon as service' and that there was NT SERVICE/ALL SERVICES in 'login as service'
Once again, not sure how revelant it is, but I've checked my CPU has SSE 4.2.

Obviously I've already applied the standard update driver, disable antivirus/windows defender, but I don't think it has much to do with my problem anyway.

Thanks for any answers

Hello

I have the exact same issue here. Running on an alienware r15 (i7-8750H, 1070 GTX, 512 SSD, 16 GB RAM), passed the check from oculus.

From the log files:
OculusSetup.log
[Debug] [15.12.2018 18:42:48] Installing oculus-runtime.
[Error] [15.12.2018 18:42:49] Librarian exited code 18
[Debug] [15.12.2018 18:42:49] Install 'Dawn.Setup.InstallPackagesStep' failed.
[Warning] [15.12.2018 18:42:49] Rolling back installation.

OVRLibrarian.log
[Debug] [15.12.2018 18:42:48] Starting up OVRLibrarian v1.16.0.0.
[Debug] [15.12.2018 18:42:48] Invoking service 'OVRLibraryService' with arguments [install-package, C:\OculusSetup-DownloadCache\oculus-runtime.zip, C:\OculusSetup-DownloadCache\oculus-runtime.zip.sig].
[Debug] [15.12.2018 18:42:49] Service 'OVRLibraryService' exited with code 1066+18.
[Debug] [15.12.2018 18:42:49] Exiting with code 18.

I deinstalled every Tool (Alienware Command Center/OCtools, MacAffee) tried with activated and deactivated firewall, Rift attached and not attached, checked for the services as logon options, checked and set the path following several guides, tried installing using the hidden administrator.

Bascially I want to use the rift in teaching chemistry at my university, but if these problems cannot be solved easily and happen often I will have to switch to WMR Headsets, which seem to be much easier in installation. I am bound to Dell hardware.

Any help would greatly be appreciated

Rip

Following an idea from what I read on another thread, I installed an older setup from another site (in this case, chip.de) and it finally worked...which proves that it's a problem with the new version.
So I guess it's somewhat solved...Still, my impression of oculus took a pretty bad hit.

I got it running on the first try of fixing all the BS.

I checked my download folder of Windows 10 and there was the initial setup file that I downloaded when I got my Rift.
This is the OculusSetup.exe with file version 1.26.0.0.

I did not de-install, cleared cache, no registry cleansing, no services stopping or anything like that at all. The only thing I did was running this setup as administrator (I did it this way to be sure but do not know if it is mandetory). Then from the menu picked the option to 'repair'. I starts downloading the 5+GB of data and starts installing.
Et Voila…. it's back without issues.
I haven't been using the rift throughout the week but when I tried to yesterday all the S$$$ started. Now that it is running again I check de history log and noticed the update was done in the background 4 days ago already and that I find interesting. Regardless the Oculus Home is running again and in the changelog I found version 1.33.....
EDIT: By the way the broken process running in the background is now working with version OVRServer_x64.exe 750915-public

Oculus‑software, versie 1.33.0
Dash:
  • We've added a new system keyboard to Dash. You can access it by clicking on the keyboard icon at the bottom right of any virtual desktop window.
  • We've updated Dash's background environment with new textures and lighting.

Home:
  • You can now report offensive behavior and content within Home. Use the context menu or social panel to initiate a report.
  • We've added a new collection of festive items to celebrate the holidays! *
  • Assets include:
  • Decorations
  • Lodge Sofa
  • Lodge Armchair
  • Antique Sled Table
  • Lodge Rug
  • Rustic Dining Stool
  •
  •
  •  etc etc

Anyway, I did it in this way and it seems none of the apps I'm missing. There are coming in new updates for some of them even.

When that is done I'm going to do a reboot, hook everything up and see if it is all good now.
In case it is not I report back

Hello,

As I am a first time customer, repair is no option for me, nevertheles thanks for sharing your solution!

The tip from zokero worked out, using an old version of the setup it installed without any problems. Oculus rift support tells me they are aware of an error causing this symptoms and want me to install the newest version. Have not done that, first want to here from them if they changed someting within the last 24 hours... Never touch a runnig system especially not if you just got it running.

I got my installer from CHIP website.
