Setup Problem: My Rift headset is not recognizing my HDMI connection. Help!

I am running the Oculus Rift setup software and I have plugged in all my cables for the headset and the sensor.  The USB connections are fine, but the HDMI connection just shows a spinning circle.  It's not going to a green checkmark.  The mouseover prompt says "you may need to switch your monitor or other devices to a different port first".  How do I find out what port my monitor is attached to, and how do I switch it so that I can get the HDMI connection for my headset to be recognized??

First, you should make sure Rift is connected to the HDMI port on the dedicated graphics card. For example, a card from Nvidia or AMD (not Intel integrated, so you can't use the port on the motherboard).

Usually video cards have a few ports, like HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, etc. Rift should be on the HDMI port directly. Any monitors you have should be on another port, using an adapter if necessary.

Also, you may have multiple video cards on your computer. For example if you have SLI or CrossFireX, or even if you only have 1 dedicated GPU but the motherboard came with an integrated GPU. In any of these cases, you want to make sure Rift and all monitors are only plugged into the primary dedicated GPU.

See the image below. Rift should be on 12, while your monitor can be on 11 or 13. Importantly, nothing can be connected on the motherboard ports (8 and 9) as this will conflict with Rift and cause it to not work.

If you are on a desktop computer, just follow the video cable from your monitor to the PC, or look on the back of the case as if you only have 1 monitor attached it should be easy to see which one is not the Rift cable.

Hope that helps.

Also, you should download the Compatibility Tool to test your computer.

It's possible you have an old video card or old video card driver that is not supported.

It might possibly be that the HDMI cord that goes into your headset is loose.  Just grab the cord by the part that goes in and try pushing it in.  That seem to be the most common issue tbh from what i have seen and experienced myself.  If al else fails w/ above comments. But it is the simplest to check.

Problem solved, I had my monitor plugged into the VGA port on the CPU instead of the GPU.  Got a VGA-to-DP adapter and plugged it into the GeForce GTX 1080 GPU.  Thanks for the help 🙂

You can also pull out the foam cushion to get easier access to this plug. This was the problem I was having. Thanks!
