So my Rift S worked fine until beginning of last year. It was evening playable on a pc that oculus app said was below minimum requirements for vr. Last year it started having an error saying it could no longer track the headset. It did though since I could look around in vr without issue. But my controllers would lock in place and could only move left or right in a fixed position. Also the cursors for the controllers would begin to drift terribly. A couple days ago I got a brand new pc. Windows 11, i7 processor, 32g ram, and a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. I installed the meta link app, and during setup it said it couldn't find the headset sensors. After changing usb ports a couple times, it could read them and I got to the point where it shows the video for headset adjustment, then froze my pc. After a force shutdown and restarting it, meta link said my pc didn't meet minimum requirements for vr. This time i got to setting the guardian boundary, then it went to static, then black with red lights in the headset. Meta link got stuck in loading and I had to exit it through task manager. I plugged the display port cable in a port literally labeled display port, and meta link couldn't find it. After more fiddle with many different ports, and reinstalling meta link around 6 times, I was able to open meta link again and it no longer said i don't meet requirements. I get in vr, it looses the controllers a few times but fixes itself. I get into steamvr no problem. I go to load blade and sorcery through the lobby in steamvr, screen goes black but still seemed to have audio for a minute. I look at my pc monitor and a stream I was watching is going frame by frame. I try moving my mouse, and notice that both my mouse and keyboard lost power due to the meta link app and Rift S, and had to force shut down this 2 week old pc for the second time because of this. It seems meta really has been trying to kill off all Rifts that were left.

Make sure you only use display ports on the graphics card. If your motherboard has one, that won't work, it will be connected to the integrated Intel GPU that isn't VR compatible, instead of the 4070TI.
If you have one available, try connecting the Rift S's USB cable to a powered USB hub. The Rift S uses a LOT of power, motherboards can't always handle it (or it's borderline so works intermittently). A powered hub will provide more power and might help keep the headset stable. I had many issues when the Rift S first came out due to this, plugging it into a powered hub (I got an Orico one) fixed everything and it's been flawless ever since.

So I tried what you said. I bought a powered USB 3.0 hub, and plugged the display port plug into one of the lower slots on the pc that lines up with the graphics card, so I think that's right.
I turned off my VPN, redownloaded Meta Quest Link, and it again said my pc doesn't meet minimum requirements. I restarted meta link through the beta tab, and it went away. I plugged the powered USB hub into I think 4 or more different ports on my pc before it before it passed the Headset Sensor Check. I then paired my controllers and my pc froze.
I restarted my pc, kept my VPN off, and restarted meta link. Had to restart meta link again to remove the doesn't meet minimum requirements message, and this time it said everything worked. I put the headset on, saw the menu in VR, and was able to look around.
My controllers were once again locked to a position right up against my chest, and the left controller I had to bend my wrist back and turn it towards the left like a door knob to align it with the right controller which I held normally.
Then got the same error message as on my old pc that said something like my headset lost tracking or it couldn't track my headset, even though I can look around just fine. Up, down, behind me, all works and it was smooth motion in the VR space.
I got into SteamVR rec room, or whatever it's called, and tried opening a game. It seemed to work, but I momentarily took the headset off to move something on my desk, put it back on and it was black then the 3 loading dots and black and white wired grid environment.
Took it off again to close out of SteamVr and the game through my desktop, put it back on and it was just black with the 3 loading dots, then black with red lights in the corners of my eyes. Restarted Meta Link, and was able to get into the game program again, but again the controllers were locked to my chest.
I have full wrist movement, but they won't extend with my arms. I was able to close out of the game and SteamVr in Vr this time, and it once again said it lost the sensors on my headset and to try another USB port on my pc.
It seems to think it's a hardware issue with the headset, but why would I still be able to see and move around normally with the headset? Is it my controllers? but then sometimes on my old pc I could move them normally for a couple minutes, then they would lock to my chest again, and give an error for headset sensors.
(Sorry for large block of text. I haven't written anything in years, and not used to it.)
