Some games have no sound, but others do

MasterDecoySG

So I encountered a new problem on my Quest pro where a game got updated (vox Machinae) and no longer had sound, as it was an isolated incident I assumed it was a problem with the update, my friends however where not having the same issue, so I chalked it up to a problem with the Quest pro compatibility with the update.

To be clear, every other game still had sound, including the OS, i went through the permissions and every other option i could find to try to resolve the issue, but no luck.

Uninstalling the game did not work, restarting the headset did not work, the options in the games where set to regular levels (80% for them, and increasing to 100% had no effect) anyway I put it on the backburner and just used my PCVR version on the oculus store to play instead.

HOWEVER, i just bought Homeworld: Vast reaches and it too has no sound.

So now I assumed it was a problem with new installs, so I went back and uninstalled a couple of games that I Knew the sound worked in and reinstalled them, but I once again could not re-produce the bug in any other game.

Do these games use an audio codec that others don't or something, I don't want to have to factory reset my headset again, so does anyone have any other clues as to what is going on?

Hello there, @MasterDecoySG. Audio is certainly a crucial part of the overall VR experience and really adds to the immersiveness of that experience. We know you said the issue was isolated to the two games you mentioned, Vox Machinae and Homeworld: Vast reaches. Because this issue isn't affecting all of your games, we may be limited in the troubleshooting that we can assist with. One of the things we'd like you to do first is to please submit a bug report on this issue. You can find the steps to submit that report here. This will let our engineers know of any issues happening that they can look into. We know you mentioned earlier that you did not want to have to perform a factory reset on your headset, but that may be the route we need to take to see if we can resolve the issue. You can find a refresher on the steps for a factory reset below:

To perform a factory reset using your phone:

  1. Open the Meta Quest app on your phone.
  2. Tap Menu then tap Devices.
  3. Tap the headset connected to your phone.
  4. Tap Headset Settings then tap Advanced Settings.
  5. Tap Factory Reset and then Reset.

To perform a factory reset using the headset:

  1. Turn off your headset.
  2. Hold the power and volume (-) button on your headset down simultaneously until the boot screen loads on your headset.
  3. Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Factory Reset and press the power button.
  4. Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Yes and press the power button.

Don't forget to enable the cloud backup before your factory reset to save your game progress. Please keep us posted on your progress. If the issue is still there after the factory reset, we will do our best to keep working with you to find a resolution.

I ended up doing the factory reset when I got impatient and it did work.

It still doesn't get me any closer to finding out what was going on though

@MasterDecoySG We're happy to hear the issue got resolved by factory resetting! Since the bug was only happening to those specific games, you could potentially find details of the root cause of the bug in the related app developer pages. If you'd like another assistance, we're always here to help!

Ok, so today the sound disappeared for those 2 specific games again.

I hadn't played since Friday (when the sound WAS working), I haven't installed anything new, as far as I can tell, the games also did not update.

I did however get a pop up today telling me that the face and hand tracking was updated somehow.

was there an update to the OS pushed out by meta in the last 2 days?

It really doesn't seem like a practical solution to factory reset my HMD after every session.

Hello, I also recently had this problem just start happening on my Quest Pro.  I noticed last weekend sometime that the sound was no longer working on the VR Chat and Steam Link apps.  The few other apps I ran after this still had audio: Youtube, Virtual Desktop, and the Quest home world ambient sounds.

A factory reset today temporarily solved the problem as it did for the others in this thread, and after rebooting the headset, the problem returned.  I noticed that when I shut down my headset it said that it was updating.  I suspect that whatever this update is, is the thing that is causing the audio bug.  So it seems that every time we factory reset, it solves the issue, but then it updates automatically and recreates the problem.

Update:  I just found out that this only happens if my earbuds are plugged into the headset.  I can use the headset speakers in the problem apps as long as I boot the HMD with no earbuds plugged in.  Once the earbuds are plugged in, certain programs do not have sound, with or without earbuds still plugged in.

So, have you others also been using earbuds?

yes, ill give it a shot and see what happens, rather specific problem for it to be earbuds.

EDIT:

Ok so after unplugging the earbuds and restarting the HMD, the sound did indeed come back.

Plugging in the earbuds again caused the game to freeze the first time, but after closing the game, sleeping the unit for a few seconds and restarting the game had the sound working in the earbuds once again.

Will see how long it lasts for.

Still think its a rather specific bug, wonder what the root cause is.

Hi, @nbrogm, we appreciate you sharing your suggestions to assist our community member! @MasterDecoySG, we understand you're eager to return to having audio for Vox Machinae and Homeworld: Vast Reaches. However, side-loading and third-party platforms, such as Steam or SideQuest, are not supported by Meta Quest Support. These are good concerns for the app itself that the developers of Vox Machinae and Homeworld: Vast Reaches should be aware of!

We hope this helps. If you have any further questions please let us know!
