Stuck in Standby (Orange Light) 0.4.4/0.5.0.1

Long story short, since updating to the 0.5.0.1 runtime, my rift is effectively bricked in standby mode. The only thing that makes me think it isn't a cable problem is the headset display shows up in my Nvidia control panel, the config utility detects everything just fine. The only thing that isn't happening is video showing up and getting to the Rift Screen. Motion tracking in the demo works fine in direct mode. No image shows up for the same test in extended so I cannot tell if that would have affected it. I've tried switching ports on every cable, reinstalling the runtime, giving up and rolling back to 0.4.4 and still getting the same issue so now I have zero video feed on both versions. Nvidia and windows are up to date, rebooted with my Logitech camera unplugged with no progress.

This issue has happened before with me, and last time for whatever reason, plugging the AC power for the USB hub on the Oculus fixed it. That doesn't work now so after the rollback failed to fix things, I'm posting two diagnostic logs with the first being the 0.4.4 version I've rolled back to, and the second being the 0.5.0.1 log I saved after initially finding I couldn't get video anymore.

Really hoping this is a software issue and my headset isn't a fancy sleep mask now.

EDIT: Logs were past the text limit, uploading the text files as attachments.

I'd uninstall and Logitech or Razer software, Teamviewer, Origin in-game overlay, DisplayLink (or other USB video adapters), and remove any HeadlessGhosts. I'd also try a different HDMI cable, and using the DVI port with an adapter. Finally, try on a different computer to try to see if we can rule out a hardware failure.

The only things that I could find related to any LogiTech software were some Camera settings which I removed, and as for Razer, only finding some settings in a program called VRPlayer which specifically had Razer Hydra settings. Found no way to specifically uninstall the Origin in-game overlay so I've completely removed Origin outright. Couldn't find anything related to display link in system processes, services, or programs. I don't know what headless ghosts are, though the closest relevent pc term I think what you're talking about is some sort of virtual monitor external device, which I have none as far as I know.

Currently I cannot locate the HDMI-DVI adapter included with the Oculus Rift to test if it is the Oculus default cable HDMI's connector or not. Would I have to specifically order one from Oculus or would a 3rd party one from a brick and mortar store down the street work?

The last, but concerning thing is the only spare HDMI cable I have plugs into everything fine except the HDMI output on my graphics card, which I put enough pressure on to feel like I would cause damage to it by pressing any harder. Even the Oculus HDMI is hard to get back in, though moving it around does work without to much pressure on the connector.

From a technical point of view, this would mean the most likely suspect is my video card having some sort of damage connector, though through multiple restarts prior to 0.5.0.1's firmware, the Oculus always received video fine. I would think if this was indeed a connector issue, I wouldn't have gotten video from the connector period prior to the update.

I'm looking to exhaust all possible software side related issues before investing hundreds of dollars into a marginal upgrade from my current card to fix what might end up being a faulty connector. I will also add if the DVI adapter solution ends up being successful, is still not an ideal solution as both ports are used by my active monitors and would mean the loss of one to have the Oculus useable.

Looking at the debug logs:

It's really weird that the Rift is showing up at 121 Hz for you and that it seems to be the primary monitor.

Do you have some weird settings in your NVidia control panel?

Here's mine for comparison:

1980x1080@121hz is the refresh rate of my main monitor (ASUS VG248QE), with 1680x1050@60hz being the refresh rate of my secondary monitor (Dell 3007WFPT). Putting the Rift in extended mode shows it having 1080x1920@75Hz in the Nvidia Control panel under change resolution. I'll note is saying this despite the standby light still being on orange.

The control panel seems to be reading the headset just fine as a 3rd monitor in all applicable tabs, which isn't something I'm honestly expecting coming at it from as a potential hardware issue. As I mentioned before, the last time this sort of problem happened, it worked again so suddenly I wasn't quite sure what caused it to work, but once it did, it was rock-solid until the latest update.

If there are any settings in the Nvidia control panel that would help me rule out hardware issues I'm willing to test them out. If I find something that solves my problem or it suddenly starts working again, I'll update as soon as possible.

The HDMI-DVI adapter is standard, and you can buy that anywhere. I'd also buy a new HDMI cable (10ft/3m) as well.

Sorry for the delay in updates, took me a while to get enough free time to dig through my electronics storage closest. Using the HDMI-DVI Connector supplied with the Oculus DK2 I got no Video in both Direct mode and Extended using the default HDMI cable. Though with a replacement, though with the same HDMI cable that wouldn't fit properly in my 780gtx HDMI, output video successfully got to the rift and the blue light activated and visual confirmation of video showing on the Rift.

Took things apart once more and tried the default HDMI cable to double check, and though in direct mode the cable didn't work due to some sort of device initialization error that i was unable to screenshot, switching it to extended worked normally with my desktop background showing up on the Rift screen w/the blue light activating. Switched back to Direct mode and it worked then to, even though at first when I tried it via the connector it didn't. Trying to plug it back into the default HDMI with the slightly hard to insert default cable resulted in a reintroduction of the orange light persisting and no video being sent to the Rift.

So, with this I can say without a doubt that my Rift is fully functional as a display device, though now it's narrowed down to either a faulty HDMI port on my graphics card, or a intermittent connection issue with the default HDMI adapter. I'll note the current HDMI cable I use as a replacement rift cable is a HDMI w/ethernet variety, which may or may not be the reason my current card cannot accept it.

If it wasn't included in the files I included with my initial report, here is the exact page with the make/model of my graphics card -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130918

With the exact cable I am using as a replacement.

It's a relief to know I can use the Oculus once more, though at a cost of my secondary monitor which currently uses the second DVI port.

As a possible solution, rather then buying another HDMI cable to see if it is indeed my HDMI port or graphics card, is it possible to outright order another HDMI/usb braided pair that was included with the Oculus. I ask as the one included with the Oculus is very light weight and the shielding on any replacement I get would likely add to fatigue while using the Rift.

EDIT: Attempted both ends of the HDMI cable as a last ditch effort to get the current one into the hdmi port without success, though plugging the rift default cable back in got me the error I didn't record the first time through, copied it down here.

Configuration Error

There is a problem with you Rift Configuration.
Interfering software is preventing the Rift from activating. Loaded UMD is reported as 'nvwgf2um.dll'.

Hope that helps.

EDIT 2: Though I dread to admit it, the HDMI port on my graphics card is looking more than likely like the culprit for this problem. As I really don't want to upgrade or even replace my current graphics card until the next generation at the least, would something like a powered DVI splitter work for using my secondary monitor most of the time? This would allow me to not have to plug and unplug the adapter+cable further risking wear and tear damage, letting me use it until the next generation of cards beyond the current 900 series to arrive.

This is the EDID bug we spoke about: Ryuzza, it's probably not you or your cables. In Realtime-Direct mode your graphics card I assume is trying to obey the EDID extended information for the support refresh rates on the rift, which, unfortunately, doesn't include the native resolution @ 75hz. IT has a setting for 120hz 1080x960 in detail #3 which will never work.

Occasionally if you change the display position/primary/secondary physically without resetting the adapters the cached registry EDID information (in 0000, 0001, 0002, etc) will write ON TOP of the cached information for the other display, especially if they match in some ways. (refresh, back porch, etc). You can see this effect in moninfo. Leave moninfo open and move your displays around on the ports of your video card. Then refresh moninfo. You'll see a bunch of garbled data like above. And, you rift will be detected in extended desktop mode, with a amber light. I've replicated this a number of times.

I stumbled on this for other reasons relating to newer drivers in win 10, but it does cause issues and crashing all over the place.

Your HDMI port might be shared with the DVI port right next to it (it could be a psudoport) Who makes your card and I can tell you for sure, it varies from mfg to mfg. I recommend getting a Displayport to HDMI adapter and getting your other monitor in that way.

One DVI is DVI-I, one is DVI-D, there's hdmi 1.4 with nvidia 3d vision support and a Displayport.

The adapter that comes with the rift for HDMI to DVI is DVI-I. You'll notice pins missing from the middle part of the adapter. This is because the rift doesn't use any of the special data features of hdmi - it's just a dvi based display adapter, really.

I propose you do your monitor 1) on dvi-d. Monitor 2) on Displayport (or displayport to hdmi) and rift on HDMI.

Or, Monitor 1) on DVI-D, Rift on DVI-I, and 3rd monitor on displayport.

I would suspect that there's some sharing going on between the dvi-i and hdmi port. This is the case on my 290 as well. You'll probably notice that the rift becomes monitor 1 on hdmi, and monitor 2 on dvi-d. If you put the rift with a display on hdmi+dvi-i I bet you're back to standby.

If you could see all the hdmi/dvi/displayport/etc cables and adapters on my desk you would probably have a heart attack. I reccomend getting a long dvi-d to hdmi CABLE, they're handy.
