System update tracking quality regression

Jonh5413

Hello, since i can't get to meta through usual channels and getting only bot copy paste responses i decided to post it here.

I recently updated my quest2 from v69 to v71 software and noticed that there is something wrong with the tracking playing eleven table tennis, controllers were twitching, detaching, flying away. Bug is not tied to any game, this happens also in the oculus menu. After some testing with new batteries, reparing controllers and many other i figured i have an outdated quest2 to test this on an older software, which in this case happened to be v64. I did exactly that and there were no issues whatsoever no matter how fast and strong i tried to swing. After recording some videos i updated that second device to the newest software and the same exact controllers behavior occured right after launching the device. Two separate devices, same issue after update. Below are the videos showing the issue

Edit: newest v72 OS does not fix it either

I have similar experiences so no need to elaborate or repeat what Jonh said.

I will once again plead with Meta: please find it in your hearts to make the Q3 backwards compatible to the Q2 controllers.

There were far fewer tracking issues with the Q2, and we believe that the rings had a lot to do with that.  We have been begging for this since the Q3 was released, yet Meta has been absolutely silent about this.

Is there some reason that Meta refuses to consider this as a potential solution, or even an attempt at helping your loyal customer base (I have 3 headsets in my house)???

Hello @Jonh5413 !

We understand that you are having some issues with the controller tracking. We know that you have tried changing the batteries.  We would suggest you to try the below steps too:

  • Ensure your area is well lit, with enough light to see clearly, but no direct sunlight
  • Ensure your area is free of small lights such as Christmas lights, or LED strips
  • Ensure your area is free of reflective surfaces such as mirrors, glass, or polished marble
  • Ensure the tracking cameras are clean
  • Ensure your environment is free of any obstructions between the tracking cameras and the controllers
  • Remove unsupported third-party accessories that may affect tracking or controller detection. For example, controller and headset covers, controller attachments, etc.
  • Unpair and pair the controller to the headset

If this is not resolving your issue, please submit a bug report through the following steps.

Hello  @JeffG01 !

We understand that the Quest 3 is not compatible with your Quest 2 controllers at the moment. Although we suggest you to share your requests and suggestions for improvements in the Ideas page. The product teams watch for the hottest ideas, so make sure you vote and comment.

We hope this will help you.

Thank you for the suggestions, however:

  • Ensure your area is well lit, with enough light to see clearly, but no direct sunlight
    • I have been using my Q2's & Q3's for over 4 years.  My play space is well and even lighted
  • Ensure your area is free of small lights such as Christmas lights, or LED strips
    • All lighting is overhead and there are no stray lights or LED strips
  • Ensure your area is free of reflective surfaces such as mirrors, glass, or polished marble
    • There are no reflective surfaces
  • Ensure the tracking cameras are clean
  • Ensure your environment is free of any obstructions between the tracking cameras and the controllers
    • There are no obstructions
  • Remove unsupported third-party accessories that may affect tracking or controller detection. For example, controller and headset covers, controller attachments, etc.
    • The app I use is Eleven Table Tennis.  An adapter is used to make the game more immersive, especially for real-life table tennis players.  Every LED on the controller is visible!
  • Unpair and pair the controller to the headset
    • Have done this many times, as well as reboots, redrawing boundaries, even headset resets.

Hey JeffG01!

Thanks for the detailed response - we really appreciate it.

Can you confirm if the tracking issues still persist when the table tennis adapter is removed?

This has nothing to do with the adapter,i tested this with and without adapter on two separate devices and two set of controllers, this is also not any game related, you can swing in the quest menu, bug is still there.

Confirmed, the problem is exactly the same with or without the adapter.

Hey Jonh5413,

Thanks for confirming that for us! We appreciate the thorough troubleshooting you've carried out.

So, these tracking issues occurred on two different Quest 2 headsets that you tried, Jonh5413?
