Tell me if you’ve experienced this in a meta 3 (long post)

Tell me if you know what is up with my meta 3.

A 128GB model purchased the year the 3 came out. No problems until last Saturday. I was playing Batman, casting to the TV. I closed down the game and the unit, but did not stop casting. Screen goes grey (backlight stays on). The system will not boot, but there does not seem to be a hardware issue. Tried the boot menu. I can see the about selection, choose from the menu. The headSet won’t boot, factory reset won’t work. For the rest of the week, the SIM card image comes up, the download happens, the symbol spins, then… backlight. Tried to sideload update, headset not recognized. Okay, seems we are bricked.
keep trying,..nothing. Until today. Try the system again, this time we get sounds and I control the volume., then it starts  setup mode. Also, the Meta app tells me to hit continue for setup. Then the app opens, no setup run. Connects the controllers, then the image spins and won’t let me continue. Turn off again. Several times later a couple of hours  (and several times the headset reloads/resets).  Now it boots and asks what language to use. The controllers aren’t connected though, so I cannot make a selection.  It seems that over time and reloads, the memory may be overwritten.

I do not relish the idea of purchasing a new headset, basically, Meta will rework the memory corruption and sell my headset to the next guy.  I would not bring this to the forum but for the headset now trying to run setup.

Any ideas? Version 72 bug, perhaps?

@Steve_JG  during setup, if the controllers are not setup, you might be able to use the heads cursor. It's a white dot in the centre of your view, which when you move the dot on to something you want to select [by moving your head] you can select it by pressing the sound button.

Thanks for thinking about it. After the controllers wouldn’t react, the screen became “sticky” (I.e. the screen earth would move like the worst case of drift I have ever seen, or the headset cursor would stay in one place and not allow a selection.

my current thought that if the boot file is corrupted, and since I cannot connect to the internet, since there is no set up, the headset is trying to install a corrupt file. My best guess is researching why I can’t get the headset recognized with the sideload update tool on line and try to reinstall a fresh download.

As always, I am open to other thoughts on the subject.

@Steve_JG  I bought a quest 2 with a known fault of the meta logo boot loop of death. I could get into the USB debug menu and factory reset, but that was about it.  I ended up removing the4 inner faceplate and the outer faceplate and disconnected the battery from the PCB. I also held the buttons down for about 5 minutes whilst the battery was disconnected, just to discharge any capacitors. On reconnecting the battery, the headset started the setup process. So, it seemed that a residual charge was holding on to a bad setting, but the screen was headlocked and went black after a few seconds. This indicated a duff camera, but they all looked okay. i got a cheap camera module from aliexpress, and was fortunate to pick the damaged one as the first one to replace. Hopefully, some of this may work for you.

I have heard the the two likely hardware suspects are a camera or a proximity sensor. If I decide to replace my set, I may tear it down then. Been a while since I have messed with hardware like that. If I do a tear down, I will keep you informed

@Steve_JG  you can test to see if it's the proximity sensor by disabling it using the MQDH software -

Update, if there is any out there curious.

i allowed the headset to drain down. To the best of my ability, without disassembly, discharged the system. Having done that the headset went through the setup process and is now installing the library.
current issue is that the headset feels hot, so there still maybe a hardware issue after all. I will update once or twice more as I use the headset.

edited to say: after re- reading the reply, I essentially did the same thing oculusness did by discharging the battery and letting the headset reset without the hardware replacement. I should have given credit where it was due for that solution.

Final update: the headset worked fine for two days. All the software installed, games and apps. Version 72 was installed. I got to watch a few YouTube’s. Next day, 100% battery. Turn the set on: nothing. Back to the Sim Card reinstall image, thenThe backlight.

so I am out of the game until replacement
