Thoughts about Quest 3 Lenses

AuHunter78

I purchased the Quest 3 headset and all of the accessories. Cost came to about $1000 U.S. Two days after using them, the right lens became blurry in the center. After close examination, I discovered a hair sized scratch. Why are the lenses made so cheap? Does having the pancake lenses make them more prone to scratching, as they are more exposed to the outside of the headset? I never experienced scratches on the Quest 2. Other than this lens issue, I was really satisfied with the performance, feel and immersion of the headset. Because of this issue, I returned the headset and all of the accessories.

Let me know what your thoughts are on the lenses scratching so easily and what precautions everyone takes to avoid damage!

Hi @AuHunter78

Optical lenses tend to be made out of CR39 or Polycarbonate, both are quite soft materials. When cleaning your headset only use a perfectly clean microfibre cloth, no solution should be used. Furthermore, using eye glasses within the headset increases the chances of both the lenses rubbing together and causing abrasions.

Hopefully this helps the next time you purchase a new VR headset 🙂

Thanks for the reply! I  did buy a cleaning kit from Bestbuy, designed exclusively for the headsets. It came with a cleaning solution and a cleaning cloth. I bet you anything that is what scratched the lens. (Insignia™ - Cleaning Kit for Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro & other VR headsets).

I already returned the headset to my local store. Are the lenses in the Quest 2 different than the lenses in the Quest 3?

Okay, thank you for letting us know! Regardless, it is absolutely important to us that you have all the details you'll need on the differences between these headsets, so we're glad to assist further! The new Quest 3 headset have pancake lenses which are slimmer and more compact compared to the Quest 2 lenses- this means that the newer headset doesn't extrude quite so far from your face. Also, the headset-mounted display is now 40% thinner, which translated to a much more comfortable wearing experience. For more information on the comparisons between these headsets, please check out this article, which goes more in-depth on those specifications. Let us know if you have any further questions on this subject and we'd be glad to help!

I went back to my local Bestbuy today, and re-purchased the Quest 3, along with the Elite Strap and the hard carrying case. I plan to store the headset in the case when I am not using it, to avoid any lens damage in the future. I look forward to using this great headset once again!

Hello, hello! We're incredibly glad to hear that and we wish you a warm welcome back into the VR world! We hope you're able to use your new headset to the fullest and enjoy all the new features it offers! Should any further problems pop up regarding this headset, please let us know! We'd like to do everything we can to ensure your VR gaming experience is thriving!

Your not going to believe what happened today! I tripped and fell face first and damaged the headset I just bought. The screen appears cracked and the left arm snapped off. My store will not replace it. Now, I do not know what to do. Any ideas?

Hello @AuHunter78! Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention; we'd be happy to help. Would you mind sending us a PM so we can look into other possible options for you?
