Trouble pairing meta quest 2 and controllers via link cable

Hello,

I am working with a museum that has an exhibit with a meta quest 2 headset connected via link cable to a pc, i believe with an nvidia rtx 4060 gpu. It was working without issue for years until a few months ago. Now, we are having difficulties establishing a stable connection between the headset and the computer. When the computer starts up, more often than not the headset will not be paired at all, even though it is always plugged in. We used to be able to reestablish the link by unplugging the headset and plugging it back in, but now not even that will work. The cable has been replaced and it still does not work, so I don't know if a faulty cable was ever the issue. I tried using airlink to go wireless, but when the headset and computer are connected to wifi, I get a message that the gpu is not compatible with VR, and cannot pair any headset to it whatsoever, even though a VR exhibit has been running on that PC with that headset for years..

Ideally, I would like the headset to be paired with the computer on startup so the exhibit can start running without as little startup assistance as possible. What steps can I take to accomplish this?

Thanks.

Hi @SyrupTheWitch!

We understand that you're having difficulties establishing a stable connection between your Quest 2 headset device and PC. We appreciate ruling out the Quest link cable part for us by replacing it.

Let's ensure if the link connection is properly established. For this, we'd recommend you to perform the below:

  1. Open the Meta Quest Link app on your computer.
  2. Turn on your Quest headset.
  3. Plug your USB 3 cable into a USB 3 port on your PC and then plug the other end into your headset.
  4. A message displays in VR prompting you to Allow access to data. Select Deny. If you mistakenly 'Allow' the prompt, you must unplug your USB cable from the Quest and plug it back in.
  5. When prompted to Enable Meta Quest Link, select Enable to begin remote rendering using Meta Quest Link.

Further, this simplified public article on how to set up Meta Quest Link, may come in handy.

If you're still having the connectivity issue, we'd recommend you to consider the below:

  • Ensure Air Link is disabled in Settings on the headset
  • We'd recommend you to repair the Meta Quest Link app. for this, perform the below:
  1. Go to https://www.meta.com/quest/setup and click Download software.
  2. Select Repair.
    1. If Windows asks you if you are sure you want to open this file, click Yes.
    2. If Windows Defender prompts Windows protected your PC, click More info, and then click Run anyway.
    3. If your antivirus software restricts the file from opening, temporarily disable your AV and continue.
    4. Please remember to re-enable your antivirus software once you have completed the repair.
  3. Allow the repair process to run, download and install.
  4. Launch the Meta Quest Link app.
  • We'd recommend to install the latest Meta Quest drivers. For this, do the below:
    1. Close the Meta Quest Link app.
    2. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run command.
    3. Enter C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-drivers. (File path may be different per user based on the install location)
    4. Open oculus-driver.
    5. Open the Meta Quest Link app and then try to connect your headset again.

  • Moreover, we'd recommend you to check if received the latest USB driver and operating system updates. For this, we'd recommend the below:
  1. Update your graphics card driver for Oculus Rift S
  2. Update Windows
  3. Restart PC if any updates are found and installed

@SyrupTheWitch  you might also want to look at the SteamLink or Virtual Desktop apps to try instead of airlink, as they're both less picky about what hardware they're running on.
