USB bootmode when charging

When the Quest 3 is off and I plug it into the charger, the headset goes to USB boot mode. It won't charge in this mode and the headset gets warm to the touch. (so maybe it's charging and consuming power)

Plugging it in while the headset is on, then shutting it off, seems to work as expected (just charges, no USB mode).

I am using the charger that came with the headset. E.g. its annoying to put the headset on while its plugged in.

Faulty cable, charger, or headset issue? Other reports of this?

(This appears to have started with the recent update.)

Hello there, @CptV4d3n. Having the ability to charge your headset easily and without issue is something we want to ensure all of our users can do. Charging issues can definitely take away from an overall great VR experience. That being said, we are more than happy to look into this further for you. Just to ensure that we can give you the best assistance, we'd like to ask you a few questions:

  • When did you first start experiencing this issue?
  • Are you receiving any kinds of error messages or any messages at all when you try to charge your headset?
  • Are there any troubleshooting methods that you have tried to resolve this issue?

Once we have these details, we'll be able to better determine which troubleshooting route to take. Thanks for your time, and we hope to get this resolved for you very soon.

I first noticed this on the 26th.

There are no error messages. After being plugged in, I put the headset on and it shows a screen about booting from a USB. I select the bottom option to shutdown.

It doesn't happen immediately when plugged in. I check if it's charging at this point.

I see no issue while using the headset and being plugged in. It's only when the headset is off and plugged in does the USB boot thing happen.

I can start the headset normally after that point.

I have tried a different cable and charger and get the same effect.

At this point, I won't be charging the headset unless I'm near it. It get's pretty warm while the USB boot thing is active and it depletes the battery even while plugged in. Even games don't do that.

I’m going to try disabling “Automatically power headset to update” and see if the issue repeats.

Thanks for getting back to us regarding the headset charging. We see you have attempted a couple steps to resolve this already and are going to try change the setting for powering headset to update. Below are some additional steps we that may help.

  • Reboot the headset
  • Allow the headset battery to fully drain before attempting to charge once again
  • Factory reset the headset. What this will do is reset the device to a "like-new" state, wiping all information and data off the device. Some of this data can be restored by enabling Cloud Backups beforehand; however, keep in mind that while Cloud Backup is available to all Meta Quest developers, it's up to developers to decide whether to enable this feature for their app and what data is backed up. You can find which installed apps have Cloud Backups enabled on the Cloud Backups page of your Meta account profile. Once you've set up Cloud Backups, ensure your device is fully charged, then proceed with the directions found here.

We hope this helps, and please let us know if you still encounter the error when attempting to charge the headset
