Unable to transfer large MP4 files to Meta Quest 2

gary.situ

My specs: Windows 10, 256gb Quest 2, USB-A to USB-C cable to my PC, file size ranges from 8GB-20GB

I have over 70GB available in my Quest 2 but I'm unable to transfer large MP4 video files (all of which are >9GB) to it. I have developer mode enabled with USB debugging activated and I can't directly transfer the files over on my PC nor with Sidequest. The transfer reaches 100% but the file does not appear in my Oculus with both methods.

Several people have posted about this issue on Reddit very recently as well, some of them noted that a factory reset did not fix the issue so I have not and will not try that.

Fantastic...seems like the issue is just the Quest 2 "working as intended"...here is Meta Store Support's reply:

"I've consulted with our specialized team, and as per their review, the memory of the Quest 2 is in FAT32 (File Allocation Table). So customers will only be able to sideload files with less than 4GB. You mentioned that placing smaller files of this size seems to work. We would like you to try and do this by splitting the larger videos in two or three parts.

I know that this might cause some frustration on your part. Please know that this is not the kind of experience we wish for you to have and I hope this does not dampen your VR journey with us.

As this is the extend of the assistance we can offer you at the moment, we will be closing this ticket for the moment."

Which makes no sense as all of us were able to place files larger than 4GB onto our Quests previously, just last night I placed a 15GB MP4 file on it after using some workarounds to get it on there. I've followed up for further feedback but I wouldn't get my hopes up that this will be fixed let alone acknowledged.

Hi,
When I connect my Meta Quest 2 256GB to my MacBook Pro, at first everything looks fine, when I move small files there is no issue, but when I try to move a file that is over 5GB at some point near the end the connection to the device is lost and I need to reconnect the device, is that a known issue? tried a factory reset, didn't help.

would appreciate some assistance, thanks!

What workarounds did you use, if you don't mind me asking? I've got the same thing , I'm in the process of mailing but not holding out much hope. I just got a 13gb on but don't know how as others the same size or smaller failed. Grrr!!

This is a bug that's still ongoing. fat32 or not you should be able to do something simple like transfer over 3d movies file.

The issues from what i have found is that the quest 2 will not have more than ONE big file per folder.  I am able to transfer one 3d movie (22gb) to the movie folder but if I try to add another in it the transfer window opens but upon completion the file doesn't get moved over.

To bypass this restrictive bug transfer the 2nd movie file over to the quest 2 downloads folder instead, mine is always empty, then once the transfer is done you can move it into the quest 2 movie folder and it will work even if you already have a large movie file in it. This second step should be instant.

For some reason during TRANSFERS from PC to the quest 2 it wont allow2 BIG files in the same folder however once a file is actually in the quest you can then move the file anywhere you want.

Not sure what the idea was behind using a fat32 formatting in something modern like this where large files will commonly be used, in fact I am skeptical this is the case?

I mean why wouldn't they use NTFS over fat32?

This seems odd, as I use Sidequest to backup and restore some of my video folders which have many files over 4 GB. I even loaded a 60 GB VR file at one time on to my headset via Windows 10 USB and the Link Cable.

Thank you, that sounds really useful, and explains why the sizes it was accepting/rejecting made no sense to me. I'll try it as soon as I get chance, much appreciated! And yeah, I'm not very technical but unless they changed which they use very recently I'm not convinced either, it worked fine for me transferring multiple large files at once always until a week ago....

Exactly the same issue, its been fine transferring files for a year seems to grind along, only for nothing to transfer over. Does anyone have the link to log it with fb?

Don't fix it, if its not broken fb!

This just started happening to me several days ago. Many people on reddit are saying this began with the v51 update. It's affected not only windows but Mac and Linux as well. Their excuse of you can only transfer files smaller than 4GB makes no sense. I've been transferring huge files to the headset since I got it with np whatsoever until this latest update. Now I've tried different cables, different ports, different computers, all the "fixes" on reddit that didn't work. We're gonna need a patch from meta to fix this so I hope they don't take forever to acknowledge the problem.

Completely deleting the extension of the file works for me. Example, Remove '.mp4' from 'Movie.mp4' . So ur 'Movie' file will remains as an unknown file. Give back the extension only after you successfully copy to ur quest 2.

Last night i transferred 32 gb single file successfully.  I cannot guarantee that this will work for everyone as i am not a tech person.
