Unplayable Lag with Wired Link

Dormdude
Honored Guest

I've been trying for a couple of days to play my steam VR games on the Quest 2 that I just bought. It's just unplayable. Constant Low FPS and graphical glitches I had no issue playing them with my old original HTC vive. The Quest 2 should have less issue at the very least. But no solution I have found online has helped. I've tried reinstalling the oculus app. I've tried messing with Encode Birate, I've tried lowering game settings to their lowest, or let NVidia set the recommended settings, and other recommendations. I know it's not my cable because the Oculus USB test says it's at 2.9Gbps. It's not my pc specs. AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, 32GB Ram, Nvidia RTX 3070, m.2 SSD. I've seen lots of people say that windows 11 is not supported but that's mostly from over a year ago. I can't imagine they're this slow to add support for a huge number of people. I'm open to any suggestion. Thanks in advance

Hey there, @Dormdude! We definitely understand how concerning high amount of lag can be, especially in VR. We'd be glad to help out however we can! A factory reset as thoeby suggested would be a good idea to try out. We can also try a full clean reinstallation of your desktop application, which is basically a factory reset for your PC VR files instead of the headset itself. The steps for this are listed below for your convenience:

From the Headset:

  • Power off the headset.
  • Press and hold volume down & Power.
  • This will boot into the USB Update Mode menu.
  • Press volume button to move selection, press power button to make the selection.
  • Navigate to Factory Reset and press the Power button.
  • The device should now begin the Factory Reset process.

Full Reinstallation of Desktop Application

  • Disconnect the Rift/Link cable from the computer.
  • Disconnect your computer from the internet.
  • Backup any necessary content.
  • You can find steps on how to do so by clicking here.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode.
  • Uninstall Oculus PC app using the Control Panel.
  • Delete all Oculus folders from the following folder:
  • C:\Program Files

  • Remove any Oculus folders from the following locations:
  • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData
  • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\Local
  • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\LocalLow
  • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\Roaming
  • C:\OculusSetup-DownloadCache

  • Restart your computer in normal mode.
  • Reconnect your computer to the internet.
  • Install Oculus PC app again using the setup tool from our website here.
  • Reconnect the Rift/Link cable and re-test the headset.

Sounds a bit like this.

I had success in the past by making a full reset (not sure why - but might be that a software update is causing this again and on reset you maybe go back to an earlier version).

So you're suggesting I downgrade my Oculus app? How?

A downgrade is not really supported by Meta - it is possible but I wouldn't recommend it because it might brick your device/void warranty.

No, what I was talking about is more if you had an update and something might not installed right to factory reset it. I had it in the past that the software/firmware set back and everything worked again.

Apart from that it is possible Meta had some issues with the firmware. Seems like you are not the only one with issues. Have you checked the Software Version of the Oculus App on your PC (and if it matches the firmware on your headset?)

Seems like since yesterday's Oculus update, me and a lot of my friends are experiencing horrible lag when linked (either air or cable).  This is happening even in the home lobby, and so therefore not game-specific.

Quest 2

Thank you

Hey there, @Bob_Sacamano. We can definitely understand how concerning it is when air link/Quest link runs into performance issues like this, and we'd be glad to help out however we can! Here's some troubleshooting steps to try out, let us know how it turns out!

  • Go to https://www.meta.com/quest/setup and click Download software.
  • Select Repair.
  • If Windows asks you if you’re sure you want to open this file, click Yes.
  • If Windows Defender prompts Windows protected your PC, click More info and then click Run anyway.
  • If your antivirus software restricts the file from opening, temporarily disable your AV and continue.
  • Please remember to re-enable your antivirus software once you've completed the repair.
  • Allow the repair process to run, download and install.
  • Launch the Meta Quest PC app.

Sorry I have been busy lately. I tested a few different games and this seems to have been the fix.
