Hi all. Hoping I can get some feedback on an issue I have with charging.
First off, I'm using: Quest 3, Official Charging Dock, Elite Strap with Battery, with the power adaptor that came with the Quest 3, and the cable that came with the official charging dock. Nothing third party.
The problem scenario I'm seeing is this:
1. I use the Quest, play some games, using up some of the external battery.
2. I power the Quest 3 off and place it on the charging dock. Orange light comes on both the dock and the Quest, indicating that it is charging.
3. Some time later, several hours, maybe the next day, either way, long enough to know that charging should be complete, I notice that the light on the dock and the Quest are both still orange and haven't turned green, even though the device should be charged by now.
4. I pick up the headset to check the charging status. When it's powered off and charging, the charge status is still displayed if you look on the screen. But it says "Headset: 100%, External Battery: --%". Note the two dashes instead of the external battery percentage. It knows the battery is connected, but doesn't know the charge level.
5. I unplug the Elite Strap Battery from the Quest. The display changes to Headset: 100%.
6. I plug the Elite Strap Battery back into the Quest. The display changes to "Headset: 100%, External Battery: 100%". The external battery is now correctly shown as 100%.
7. I place the Quest back on the Dock. Immediately both lights are green.
So the problem seems to be that the Quest has trouble reading the external battery status when it's powered down and charging. Unplugging and replugging the battery seems to clear the problem.
A few points:
- This happens nearly every time, if not every time, I charged the Quest with it powered down
- If if I charge the Quest without powering down first, (i.e. it's sleeping but not powered off), this doesn't happen.
- In the actual Horizon OS GUI, I've never seen it fail to read the battery status. It's only in the powered off state that it seems to have this problem.
The Quest, charging dock, and strap, are all practically brand new, so I have no idea which of the three devices has the problem. Other than it being annoying, a big concern is that if the dock/quest don't realise the battery is fully charged, overcharge protection won't work properly and damage may occur to one of them. I notice that when it's in this state (charged, but with orange lights), the Quest feels quite warm in the area of the charging pins. When the lights are correctly green, this doesn't happen. Suggests to me that charging is occurring when it shouldn't do.
Has anybody else had problems like these, or know of any fixes? Anyone know any things I can try to troubleshoot it and see where the problem really is? I contacted Meta support, but they barely seemed to understand my problem, and wanted me to factory reset the Quest, which seems a pretty unlikely fix, considering it's something that's happening when the OS isn't even loaded up.
