Vision impaired - Quest 3 help and feedback.

Hi, so today my Meta Quest 3 arrived from Amazon Australia.  I did a fair bit of research before I bought it and had hopes that it would fulfill my needs for a VR experience as well as a virtual working environment.

A little context - I have Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, which is under developed optic nerves, this means that glasses/contacts etc don't help "boost the signal" so to speak.  This means that I sit close to my monitor almost to the point where my nose touches my screen, and in that situation I can then see very well and clearly.  I game and work in IT.

As soon as I got it out of the box and began setup I had several major problems.  The setup window was way too small and far back and I could not find any way to adjust or enlarge.  This was especially difficult with setting up the wifi and using on screen keyboard.  I actually had to resort to putting one hand over the lense to trick it into thinking my face was still in the headset, then take a photo with my smartphone through the other lense to see what the next steps were and whether I had my wifi password correct.

Once I got through the initial setup, I fumbled around for awhile until I found the ability to set the text size to it's largest.  This made things substantially easier, but not completely.  I love the fact that I can grab the edge of the menu and pull it closer, but i still found myself trying to pull it even closer or leaning into it to read something to the point where the window would go white.  I would love a feature to turn this off, or reduce it's sensitivity.

I'm wondering whether I would have the same issues using virtual desktop or similar application.

I understand that i'm likely a very niche usecase but I hope Meta will read this and take this perspective into consideration as VR is a really good way to bridge the gap in so many ways for people with vision impairments.  For example UI/Menu issues aside, The ingame VR experience is awesome.

Hi @spanx82

You said you've set the text to large.
Do you know you can also enlarge the whole window by tap on the button right from the notification bell

Thank you for bringing this up. My son is 14 and loved the original occulus but has been sad that the metaquest is not very accessible and he can’t read instructions in games which is sad. He saved up all his money for the last 2 years to buy it

Hi, I’m also a visually impaired client with optic nerve hypoplasia. I don’t see my comment on this thread anymore, but I did post a comment a couple weeks ago with optic nerve hyperplasia. I also have an under developed optic nerve. I cannot bring the windows close enough, or enlarge them enough to even begin to see the text. However; using, a projector and manipulating the screen from a flat surface I’m able to program some of the settings and navigate some of the menu options. Additionally enabling screen recognition mode on my phone. I’m also able to get the phone to read out what is in front of me as everything goes sequentially in order? I’m able to figure out where things are on the screen line by line and enabling things such as Bluetooth keyboard access Wi-Fi settings and more.

atBest I can see an outline and determine whether switches are on or off, but I cannot do anymore. Games like epic coasters are just way too busy. In fact; I bought every coaster pack in that game to ensure I had every unlocked feature available to me without accidentally making random purchases or being stuck on a pin code screen. I have brought excitement to the community around me, but cannot participate in the excitement myself after putting out this large sum of money. I would love to be able to experience everything. The way everyone else is. Well opening up the operating system is great. Let’s open up the experience and include screen reader access.  I feel left out and want this thread to gain traction sharing it on the medical community forums and other platforms. I hope will give me results. This thread cannot die alongside my desire to enjoy VR like everyone else thank you.

Definitely not the only one. This is my experience to the t. I have ADOA+ both our issues have optic nerve problems. What kind of IT work do you do?

Well for 20+ years I’ve outsourced Support services for small businesses and end users. Providing a range of support from networking user management site, deployment, database management and cloud base services. Bucking the trend  I build desktop computers and service laptops

Continuing my comment, using chrome on iPhone; the web browser would not let me finish my response without refreshing the page. I explore new technology and decided to step into VR. Excited with my work using the envision glasses for the blind and visually impaired I wanted to see what Meta had in store for all of us. With great forms existing online around the use of their other wearable, I was expecting them to do more with the Meta Horizon OS. I can see to walk around the VR worlds, but I need menu assistance from time to time. Large print as it currently stands is too small for me.my training and experience working with computers provide provides me consistent guidelines. I follow when setting up or using devices.

I have optic nerve damage from birth. I pretty much see the same way you do by the way you've explained it. So yes, Meta, please. Hear our Cries!  Even dictating this reply has been quite the challenge!
