We can't find your headset....

Another discussion on disconnection issues. This is my second Rift in 2 weeks - courtesy of PC World who replaced the first one.

Headset disconnects when warm if you apply pressure or any minor twisting force on the main shell. Examples include putting it on or taking it off, so quite fundamental really. Started doing this when setting up the lens spacing - after accidentally sliding it into the wrong position when putting the headset on.

This headset only does the "We can't find your headset, please connect your headset" error. Different USB ports make no difference, and I can wiggle the cables a lot without issue. When working everything was just fine, right up until it stopped during lens adjustment!

First headset was similar although that would give both the "We can't find your headset" and also HDMI connection errors, initially this headset worked fine as well.

Not sure if this is a manufacturing fault but the packaging the rift is supplied in really does not account for how roughly handled these packages can be in transit. I've had computer cases arrive physically bent buy 1/2 inch or so through out from the force where the packages have obviously been dropped off vans and the like. If this unit is as fragile as it seems - and my last one had 2 large fragile notifications in the packaging - then I doubt it would survive this kind of handling in transit.

Also disappointed to see no strain relief on the cable connection into the headset - this seems like a recipe for long term failure of the PCB mounted connector (from what I can see on the ifixit tear down). The cable would ideally be a right angle connector with the cable clipped into the main housing - remove all strain from the connector on the cable and PCB itself (pretty basic for any decent design engineer!)

On the plus side this second rift didn't have any green/red hazing - the first one I had had green hazing but it broke before I had a chance to deal with this issue.

Would just return for a refund but having invested in the touch controllers which work fine, a third sensor, VoprX, Virtual Desktop through Oculus store, and other things it would result in loosing a good chunk of money. Not happy for sure, wondering if the Vive might have been better.

Waiting for a response from Oculus. First response was the usual check cables/connector pins, and as my CPU is only an i5 3470 I should upgrade this - despite everything working perfectly before the unit broke. PC is not that low spec, 8GB ram, native Intel USB 3.0 ports, GTX 1080 and plenty of other goodness - would be happy to upgrade but not for what seems like a potential mechanical design issue with the Rift.

What about returning it to PCworld and getting it elsewhere, maybe then you'll get a different rift from a different batch?

Had been thinking about that. Have contacted PC World, in fact stating I did not want another from the same batch, but not heard anything back on this one yet. Always worth making Oculus aware of the issue though.

I've given up on my Rift for the time being. It's completely unusable right now. The screen blinks on and off constantly and occasionally goes to the gray/white static screen. I've managed to problem solve so many issues but I've just kind of run out of patience.

You can buy a Rift from Game now as well in the UK.

Thank you for pointing that out, I could collect and even return faulty products in my local Game store (two options in fact). That might make life easier trying to get a working Rift!

Edit: Returning to PC world for a refund, will try a unit from Game although if the next one shows the same issues I may just cut my losses and return what I can. Certainly not investing nearly as much as I spent on the Rift to upgrade my PC for an issue that seems completely mechanically related on the Rift. It worked initially just fine without issue.

Think Oculus need to up their game a bit here, pretty sure UK law requires them to sell products that are fit for purpose.... not that I am a legal expert by any means.

Thought I would post something fairly positive here... But after a little rant as Game messed me around and point blank lied to me 3 times (would recommend avoiding TBH) - managed to get my money back and ordered a Rift from Amazon. Amazon had dropped their price by that point so worked out better for me in the end!

Given John Lewis now stock the Rift I would probably choose them or Amazon over any other option (personal preference though).

With Amazon the unit was delivered on prime next day; not a dent on the outer box; and it worked flawlessly out of the box, no red/green haze, no disconnection issues, just worked fine.

Head set still seems to be working fine after several weeks; even on my "incompatible" i5 3470 I could get something like GTA V running through vorpX which I was surprised at. Only slight negative is having the rift plugged in can make some of my other USB devices pop up as not-recognised if you do a warm restart. Not really a problem as I don't need my printer or USB sound card on/plugged in when using the rift. Plus I think a Ryzen upgrade might be destined to sit under my desk sometime soon.

That's how I fee right now... I feel like the vive would have less issues. Ive spent more time fixing the oculus to play than in game at this point. I already had to return the first one because the right speaker would not work.
