Weird Problem with Oculus Rift HMD and USB 3.0 Ports

Hey all,

yesterday I took the Oculus Rift from the ofice home for testing purpose as we actually do not have any machine up and running meeting the specs for running VR Apps. (Therefore it never ran at any time before)

The Setup did its job until I had to plug the HMD in any USB 3.0 Port. Windows pops up a failure note that the power draw was too high (actually not sure if I translated it correctly, got a german installation here). Tried out all of the other ports both on the back and the front of my rig, updated every driver of the onboard USB Chips (Intel/ Via/ ASMedia - it is a msi X99s mPower Board.)
When the HMD is plugged in, the BIOS also stops booting wit a message regarding "short circuit". Ironically the camera had no problem getting recognized by the Oculus Setup and was "up and running". I also tested every port with an external USB 3.0 HDD drive without any problem.

Can you guys tell me if its just my motherboard / USB Chipset that is incompatible with the HMD?

Best regards, thanks in advance and please excuse any misspellings as english is not my first language. 😄

USB problems are quite common. If power drain for whatever reason is too high, you might try a powered HUB or card. It is the "short circiut" message what troubles me. Maybe a silly question: Have checked the HMD's USB connector for any faults?

Thanks for your reply - after I tried a powered USB 3.0 Hub (which then started to smell slightly) and nothing happened, I am pretty sure I / The company I work for got a broken unit and we will return it. I was wondering too why the Rift didn't show up anywhere plugged both in the Intel / ASMedia / Via and finally the Hub. Hopefully the new unit will work as expected. As I said, never had any problems with the USB Ports and tested different devices on every port which worked and work as expected. 🙂

Thanks für your support!

edit: And yes, of course I checked the USB Plug of the HMD - looked pretty "normal" to me.

You should get it returned then. Contact Support and provide them with logs and as much information as possible.
If the Rift for whatever reason indeed produces a short circuit there's danger you damage your other hardware.
