So long story short I’m buying a valve index off a good mate of mine but the headset comes with no base stations and I’m not really sure what the major difference is other than the fact that the 2.0 covers more space and has a higher fov, although that could be good for others that doesn’t really apply for me because my room isn’t that big. I know for sure I’m not properly educated on the base stations so if anyone could just tell me the purpose of the base stations and what the major differences between them are I would appreciate it greatly .

@ashtana2 If he was a good mate he would have included his 2x2.0 base stations and Index controllers. Hopefully you at least got the Index controllers, cable, and powerbox with power adapter.
For most games you only need 2x base stations. Some racing sim guys get away with just one base station For most, esp in smallish play spaces, it doesn't really matter whether they are 1.0 or 2.0 imho. Just know that you cannot mix and match them, they both need to be the same version. If you need more info on how to setup base stations, just do a little googling.
TBH after factoring in the cost of base stations, plus whatever you're getting charged for the Index headset, you may have been better off just getting a Quest 3 or 3s imho. Plus, headsets with inside out tracking that don't require base stations are a lot easier to setup and a lot more convenient to use.

Reddit copy/paste posts are quite easy to spot when they ask questions about non Meta VR headsets. Not even a challenge. 🙂
But while we wait for the spam links to be edited in...
Lighthouse 1.0 works by flashing an IR pulse in the room, then sweeping two IR lasers: one horizontal and one vertical. The headset and controllers are covered with IR light sensors. The time between the sensor seeing the pulse and getting hit with each sweep is measured to calculate the angle. When there's two base stations, they need to take turns, slowing down the tracking rate, since their lasers would interfere with each other.
Lighthouse 2.0 works with no pulse and only one sweeping laser. Instead of a simple pure on laser beam, they modulate data into the beam. It contains the angles of the beam and the id of the base station. No timing is needed, just one sensor being hit will convey all the info.
Because of this, Lighthouse 1.0 base stations can work with all SteamVR tracked devices (both 1.0 and 2.0). But Lighthouse 2.0 base stations only work with 2.0 devices. The older devices can't read the modulated laser data.

@kojack Ya, Reddit kiddies are so predictable, lol!
I cancelled my Reddit sub earlier this year because I couldn't keep up trying to correct a lot of meta-hating kiddies, then getting lectured (including a few short term bans) by Reddit kiddie mods who told not to do this, lol! To bad because occasionally there is some good info.
