Whenever I open the oculus app and forget to force close it or have it on screen, it runs down the battery a tonne. It’s annoying and I would like to know if there’s a fix or a method around plugging it in and my phone becoming a space-heater while using the app.

Ensuring the application is fully closed will ensure it is not active running using any battery. We would recommend using the feedback and bug report for the app to provide this information to the proper team so that it may be reviewed but also provides them the details to assist in their investigation.
