Why does the setup require 2 HDMI ports???

legit I have spent so much time and money trying to get the oculus to work, but then on the setup it says to it plug in the oculus’ hdmi port. Well how the hell am I supposed to do that when my monitor is plugged in??? It’s impossible to have them both plugged in at the same time and I can’t just buy another HDMI port and put it on the computer. Why doesn’t the setup just have all the other stuff but the HDMI checked and then say “okay now plug in the Oculus’ HDMI cable and put your oculus on and continue the setup from there” that seems much more logical to me

I don't think Oculus VR was ever meant to be used as a standalone monitor/viewscreen for your PC; the HMD is an alternative screen to your main monitor. The HMD was also not meant to be hot-swapped with your main monitor.

Looking at the requirements on an Oculus VR box it states that you need a compatible HDMI 1.3 port. This statement (I assume) is made assuming that you have a monitor connected to your PC already (by HDMI or other).

As for your situation, afaik you need a monitor and your HMD plugged in even past the setup process, so I would consider looking at alternate options for plugging in your monitor (even a USB-HDMI adapter would work for a bare-minimum solution, but I would suggest using other video-out's like a Displayport or DVI/DVI-D)

I agree with you in that the concept of a fully-dedicated VR PC is nice (and I would definitely tinker with one if I had the chance), but sadly the Oculus software is just not set up for that.

Pretty much all the compatible video cards will come with 3 or 4 video outputs. Typically you can see 1 HDMI, but several DisplayPort, and maybe a DVI port. Rift can work on any of those ports with the proper adapter. For example, using a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter (rated for 4K @ 60Hz) should be fine.
