Why must charging the Quest 2 be incredibly difficult? Is there a fix?

Hi,

I've been a Quest 2 owner for the past few months and one of the biggest issues is that charging the device is not straightforward.  For reference, I have a few laptops that have dual batteries that allow me to actively maintain them, whereas the Quest 2 is fundamentally incompatible with the Elite Strap with Battery (more onto that in a minute).

Since I don't have the means of checking the system voltages, I have to assume that keeping the battery between 20 or so percent to 80% as being ideal.  Problem is that the Quest 2 has no way of setting this and I've known for over two decades that "fully charging a lithium ion based rechargeable" is the fastest way of destroying them.  For the most part, I prefer to operate while plugged in but never fully charged.

What it boils down to is of the following:

  • The system is inconsistent as to which battery it wishes to charge, sometimes discharging the headset battery while the Elite Strap with Battery increases.
  • The Elite Strap with Battery can only be charged up to 70% without being attached to the headset.  I've never actually fully charged it since owning it.
    • When I bought the strap, the batteries were expired.  Couldn't find anything newer than 2 years old.
  • The Elite Strap with Battery attempts to charge the headset's own battery rending the Elite Strap with Battery entirely pointless and incompatible with the headset.  From 70% charge, it only lasts 30 minutes.
    • It should be worth noting that if the main battery is hooked into series, keeping a device "charged" like this with a power bank can fry the battery.  Any voltage spikes have to be absorbed by the main battery as it is often used as a "buffer."
  • The Elite Strap with Battery charges the headset while said headset is switched off.  Meaning I cannot leave it plugged in unless I wish to leave it empty.
  • For reasons I can't understand, the Elite Strap with Battery occasionally overheats.  I assume the logic of it is similar to that of a power bank with communication ICs, so it makes little sense as to why it gets very warm.
    • For those unaware, 45C is the maximum recommended temperature of lithium ion based rechargeable batteries.  I've handled enough batteries near that temperature to have some understanding of how warm that is.

I want to use my Quest 2 more often, but as it stands it's very difficult to maintain the built in batteries between the device itself and the Elite Strap with Battery.  Is it possible to get fixes to this or is it something, like the iPhone, where it'll only be addressed with a future hardware revision.  Thanks.

I've sent a PM, but the way the firmware is worded it seems to lean towards "performance" rather than "battery longevity for years to come."

Hi there!

We just wanted to check if you have managed to find a fix for the issue you were facing, or if we can still help in any way?

Please let us know if you need any further assistance.
