Youth gorilla tag - can’t talk/hear others

Khkroeger
Honored Guest

My 10 year old can no longer play with others in gorilla tag since the latest update. He only hears monkey sounds, cannot talk or hear others. We have re-set, updated the game. He got a message (3/31/24) when powering on that parental restrictions have been updated by meta but I cannot find anything online supporting that or telling me what has changed.

Has something changed that no longer allows under 13 to play? Is there a way to bypass?

It's rated E for Everyone. You are incorrect.

Yes, the store say youth 0 and that definately should be changed.

A lot of trouble could be avoid, if people don't have to search in the terms of service for that information.

This monkey sounds only on accounts 12 and under is not helpful. As the parent i am not able to modify any content restrictions i can only allow access and times. Why can I not update chat type based off the maturity of my child. I can create a new account and claim the child as 13+ but then that changes the content that they might have access to.

If you want to protect the children, simlpy let them open private rooms, where they can meet with their friends only, and let them chat there freely.

The issue is Meta's parental controls are still very limited and arbitrary. They only recently "allowed" accounts for U13 users(I think the cutoff is now 10?). Combine that with the fact they are getting sued by every parent of a dead or abused child, and this will only become worse. To protect themselves legally, they will make decisions that force parents to either ban their kids from anything touching their platform or to allow them to circumvent it, giving them access to everything. It's a mess, but not surprising its this way considering nobody has children anymore. It's actually going to get much much worse and companies won't spend any resources on aiding parental supervision unless they are forced to by a lawsuit or the government. Truth is, I think they prefer it this way. A frustrated child or parent that circumvents the arbitrary age restrictions allows them access to kids unimpeded while providing perfect legal cover.

Gorilla Tag, the app, would have to spend a lot of time and resources to make a custom parental control account solution(similar to Roblox) to safely allow U13's to play without potential legal liability. Given the Gorilla Tag isn't a full blown massive platform like Roblox, this won't happen.

Also, if you've listened to Gorilla Tag chatter before, it can get pretty vile. Some pre-pubescent boys in particular clearly have zero parental supervision and are on there, screaming racist obscenities and other vile things for sheer shock value. I ended up buying a second headset for my younger kid and that has monkey voices on(but it can also be toggled off for when he plays with older brother in lobby). We set strict rules on how that works, headset goes in time out if he doesn't abide. If you already own two quests, I'd set up an account on one that is 13+ and let them use that for these special circumstances. It's obnoxious, especially given pre-existing accounts have cosmetics they bought or earned, but what can you do?

yes if u are under 13 and playing gorilla tag u only hear monke noises

is there any way to allow them to pay and hear their friends short of creating an entirely new account with a false DOB?

Hey there @Khkroeger! We understand having access to all the features in the game can enhance your experience in VR! In some games there are some restrictions based off age, and we hope you find the information and links @Choleni provided helpful!

Hi @HurricaneG88! At this time, there are restrictions on communication for children under 13 years old. We know how important this is to you, and we want to provide you with some important information. We do not recommend creating a new account with incorrect information as this can result in a disabled Meta account. Check out this link for more information on why you need to have the correct account for your age. To get your suggestions out for a possible change in the future, we recommend submitting your ideas to our Ideas Forum. This way we can get more eyes on the changes you would like to see, and we will have more information on how to make your experiences in VR more enjoyable! okay so alot of them are saying that it makes you hear monkeys if you are 13 or under but that's not true, the real reason is because they have their voices turned to monkey. to change it you go to the computer (in-game) and go to voices and switch it to humans. hope this helps

Hi @yoke.57560 🙂

I assume you don't have a child account?
Because child accounts can't switch to the human voice.

Gorilla tag FAQ

Can my Child communicate with other players?
Children are automatically restricted from communicating with or otherwise making their personal information publicly available to other players. When your Child tries to communicate with other players using voice chat, only monkey noises will be heard by other players. No voice data of your Child is transmitted.

Can my Child turn off hearing other players’ monkey noises?
No. You cannot disable this safety feature for Children.
