oculus link crashes (quest 2 software issue?)

ZippyQuest
Honored Guest

Ive never seen anyone else with this problem. After maybe 10 minutes of playing beatsaber or really anything on the quest 2 my screen will freeze and I can look around. And behind myself is a flipped upside down image of what I saw in front of me and the areas in between the images are void or stretched smeared versions of what I saw before the freeze. I have to unplug and replug the link cord back into the headset and open link again to get back and it crashes again after about 10 minutes again and then you repeat until you're too frustrated to keep trying 😛

Hey there ZippyQuest! When Oculus Link crashes, please try plugging the cable into a USB port in a different location on your computer. If you have updated to Version 38, please restart your headset to ensure the software is loading correctly. Please also ensure that the Oculus software is up-to-date on both your Quest 2 and your computer. If you are still having these issues, please go ahead and submit a support ticket here. Please make sure to include all details regarding your issue. We hope you find this information helpful!

I have the exact, word for word, problem. Have you found any fix yet? For me it doesn't happen every day, only some days, sometimes i have little to no issues or crashed only every hour. But recently i get them, just as you described, every 5 minutes x-x

Hey there! Okay from the sound of what you're experiencing it doesn't sound pleasant at all! We would like for you to please try Repairing your Oculus PC app on your computer. We will go ahead and provide you with the correct steps down below:

To repair the Oculus PC app:

I would like to hop on this subject too. My Quest 2 keeps crashing with Link. I can run most PCVR games for about 2 minutes, then they crash and fall back to the Oculus home screen (without any error message).

I run this on a RTX 3090, Win 11 system with 64 GB RAM. Latest NVIDIA drivers, latest Quest 2 and Oculus software and drivers. I already did the recommended repair install today. Nothing seems to work.

ERAZER X7849 Notebook - CPU: Intel Core i7 6820HK - GPU: GTX 1070, 8 GB GDDR5 RAM - RAM: 32 GB (4x 8 GB DDR4 HYNIX PC4 17000 DUAL CHANNEL) - MAINBOARD: INTEL HM170

Hey ZippyQuest and Sharkster-NVR. We never like hear that gameplay is interrupted by crashing the app. We can only imaging how it makes you feel. Let's see what we can do to turn that frown upside down!

You can try to do a clean install of the Oculus App on the PC.

If this doesn't work and streamline this, to keep your information private we would suggest you collect full logs and send them to us in a Support ticket via chat or email HERE

We have provided the steps below to collect logs.

  1. Open the Run window (Windows key + R).
  2. Enter and run: C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics\OculusLogGatherer.exe
    • The above link is the default directory. Bear in mind that if you installed the Oculus PC app to another drive you will need to update the command with the correct file path.
  3. Select the checkbox next to ‘Full logs’.
  4. Select "1 day" from the "Collect last" drop down list.
  5. Wait for the log collection to finish. This can take some time to complete.
  6. The program will automatically generate a zip file containing your logs, which will be saved to your desktop automatically.
  7. Attach the newly created zip file to your next support response.

We look forward to hearing from you. Your experience means so much to us.

Any luck on this???

Same exact issue, EXCEPT....

1. Persisted across four different headsets (first one I had a year and this was a non-issue, PCVR daily...second one half a year...the most recent two it wasn't even a month...Got two RMA'd/bought a new one twice...SAME EXACT ISSUE

2. Persisted across multiple Link cables (all China brands, but all highly rated on Amazon and known-working)

3. Persisted across fresh Windows OS install/software install/numerous repairs/swapped out motherboard, RAM AND Graphics card, all upgraded...

4. lnconsistent freezing, outside of the fact that it happens more and more often until headset is inevitably replaced....

I CAN NOT keep doing this dance, I need to understand why so I can fix it...Please Meta, HELP US....

I admire your dedication and completely agree. That dance does not sound the least bit fun. This will be pretty lengthy, but here's like, everything I have on this one.

The first thing to look for is the type of computer your using. Are you on a desktop or laptop? What I'm sharing below will be for desktop PC's. Let me know, and I can help with some laptops if necessary.

Once we're working on a desktop PC, double check your specs to make sure you meet the requirements for Link/AirLink. Here's a link that breaks down everything you'll need. Check the PC app and headset to ensure that the software is fully updated. You'll also want to double check your overall PC, GPU and CPU drivers, ensuring everything is running on the most recent version. Keep in mind! If you're running a brand new GPU that was recently released; while it may be above and beyond spec on the tin, it still may take some time for the software to be optimized for performance in VR. Optimization updates are a constant thing, so definitely keep an eye out for those.

That being said, let's get into some proper troubleshooting. 🙂

After you've confirmed your specs are good and everything is updated, look into your connection. This is the first stumbling block for a lot of us.

    1. Open the Oculus app on your PC.
    2. Turn on your Quest 2 or Quest.
    3. Plug your USB 3 cable into a USB 3.0 port on your PC, and then plug the other end into your headset.
    4. A message displays in VR prompting you to Allow access to data. Select Deny. If you mistakenly 'Allow' the prompt, you must unplug your USB cable from the Quest and plug it back in.
    5. When prompted to Enable Oculus Link, select Enable to begin remote rendering using Oculus Link
        •
  • Ensure Air Link is disabled in Settings on the headset.
  • Repair the Oculus PC Application
    1. Go to www.oculus.com/setup and click Download Oculus Rift software.
    2. Select Repair.
      • If Windows asks you if you’re sure you want to open this file, click Yes.
      • If Windows Defender prompts Windows protected your PC, click More info and then click Run anyway.
      • If your antivirus software restricts the file from opening, temporarily disable your AV and continue.
      • Please remember to re-enable your antivirus software once you've completed the repair.
    3. Allow the repair process to run, download and install.
    4. Launch the Oculus app.

Then we'll actually want to look at the Oculus drivers. Here's how to check those:

  1. Close the Oculus app.
  2. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run command.
  3. Enter C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-drivers.
  4. Open oculus-driver.
  5. Open the Oculus app and then try to connect your headset again

Next up, we'll look at your USB power settings. This is one that may or may not be an option for everyone, but just in case, here it is. 😎

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Locate your USB ports - Expand the universal serial bus controller section at the bottom of the list. Look for the "USB 3.0/3.1/3.10 eXtensible" items.
  • Right click and select Properties.
  • Navigate to Power Management.
  • Ensure that the options to save power are deselected.

While we're looking at power management, Selective Suspending is another possible option tripping you up.

  • Right-click Start
  • Click Power Options
  • Click Additional Power Settings
  • Click Change plan settings
  • Click Change Advanced Power Settings
  • Find USB Settings
  • Make sure that Selective Suspend Setting is set to Disabled, and not Enabled.

I crowed on about making sure your PC drivers and whatnot were updated, here's some helpful links to actually guide you through that. 😅

Wrapping up, we'll want to make sure your graphics settings are set to default. Any modifications here can cause all manner of display issues.

  1. Open the Oculus app on your Computer.
  2. Click Devices on the left side of the app.
  3. Click Quest and Touch.
  4. Click Graphics Preferences.
  5. Click Reset to default.
  6. Click Save and Restart

And finally... a bit of an oddball fix. I'm not able to put my finger on why this works, but in the spirit of giving you guys everything, here ya go! Try to opt in/out of the (PTC)Public Test Channel.

  1. Open the Oculus app on your PC computer.
  2. Select Settings in the left menu.
  3. Select the Beta tab.
  4. Next to Public Test Channel, click to enroll.
  5. Manually reboot the headset
  • With your headset on, hold the power button on the right side of your headset down until you're prompted with a shut-down screen.
  • Select Restart to reboot your Quest 2 or Quest.

Apologies for the length of this post. There's a lot of info to cover. I hope you're able to find a solution and get back to enjoying your games. 🤙

Being a developer ourselves, I can confirm that most Rift/PCVR apps we tested from the Oculus store have this behavior, where they crash after two minutes, when used on Q2 with PC link (doesn't matter if Air Link or cable).

Some of the apps where this behavior was tested:

Face your Fears

Home - A VR Spacewalk

SHEAF - Together EP

etc. (all free)

Most of these apps have reviews explaining the issue. For example "Face your Fears"'s most popular review (with 39 up-votes) describes this exact problem.

The stuff developed by us runs smoothly on Quest 2 with PC-Link, so it's not a hardware related issue or a faulty installation, but clearly a flaw on Oculus' side.

With every update we hope that it gets ironed out. But no luck so far. I'm sure that this bug (or how you want to call it) affects thousands of people.
