"swimming" with position tracking when making large-ish head movements

I've been having this issue with my CV1, and I've posted about it in a couple places, and people seem to think that it's weird. It's pretty frustrating. Fortunately, I don't really get nauseous from this stuff, but friends do, and it also really pulls me out of the situation.

Say I'm playing elite dangerous. If I look from left-hand "target" menu, to might right hand "systems" menu, the position tracking takes about 2-3 seconds to "settle" where the new position of my head is. During that time, it overshoots and corrects, bobbing back and forth in an oscillation that goes back and forth about 3 times, with smaller amplitude each time.

This is 100% reproducible, and happens in other games, too, such as Lucky's Tale. It doesn't take a really vigorous motion, either, just a natural, side-to-side.

My system:
i7-6700k
16GB DDR4
Asus Z170-M Plus motherboard
MSI Gaming GTX 980 TI (non-overclocked)
Brand new Windows 10 install with nothing else installed but Oculus software and VR games. Have latest chipset drivers, graphics drivers, etc. I was actually having this problem also BEFORE i reformatted my whole system. So I know it's nothing to do with anything software-wise on my system.

I didn't have this problem with the DK2 (though, I did have some other slightly different tracking problems with my DK2 here and there)

And yes, I've also tackled my environment for possible IR reflections. I've covered both windows, turned off all the lights, pointed all my monitors away from the camera and the rift, put duct tape over all other LEDs on or near my rig.

Is anyone else having this problem with their Rift?

I believe this issue has been solved on other threads.  Check to make sure your tracking camera is plugged into a USB 3 port.  If it's in USB 2 it swims like you describe.

Hope it solves your issues!

It is currently plugged into a USB3 port, and I've tried two different ports. One front-mount port and one port directly on the motherboard. The Rift is plugged into a USB3 port directly on the motherboard.

Okay, some further testing. I checked in the Oculus software and it's showing both the Rift and the camera connected as USB3. If I swap them to USB2, it correctly updates to reflect that, and similarly, when I go back to USB3, it updates to show that.

I went into my BIOS and disabled "Legacy USB support," Just in case

I tried unplugging everything but the rift, the camera, the xbox controller, and my mouse (not even the keyboard) and it still persists, even in Oculus Home.

I'm sorry to hear that wasn't the culprit.  Let me do some more reading.

There was another thread here that might yield some answers.  I'll keep looking and will edit this post with possible solutions.

Thanks! Kinda tempted to run over to Microcenter today and pick up a PCI-E USB 3.0 card, just to eliminate the motherboard's ports as an issue.

Just to be sure, did you run the Oculus compatibility tool?

Yeah I did, it said "You have USB 3.0 ports, which meets or exceeds" specification. I just went to microcenter and bought the nicest PCI USB 3.1 card they had, which I'll install tonight, see if that makes any difference.

I'm also looking for a list of USB3 cards that work 100%.My onboard USB3.0 Etron controller makes the Oculus Device page say USB ERROR for the DK2 and USB2 for the sensor, but it works, even if I have to turn it off and on a few times first.

So I bought a brand new powered Logilink USB3.0 PCIE card, with the exact same result 😞

The one Cyber recommends isn't sold in Denmark and I have had no luck finding one with the same controller. I'm not paying international shipping for something like this.
