rift s sensor check failed, usb device not getting recognized by windows error

got a rift s from a friend of mine who recently got a quest 2, connected the rift s and setup the oculus app 4 days ago and everything worked without problems, played for 2 days until the third day arrived, infinite 3 dot loading screen, rift s sensor check failed every time I went thourgh setup again and every time i connect my rift s there is a notification that says "usb not recognized". went through every single post related to this and some people got it working by reintalling windows, others used a pcie usb hub or external powered usb hub, motherboard change, power supply change, and even reinstall oculus fixed it for some, and then there's the 70% of people that just got a replacement or gave up. a lot of these posts are almost 2 to 1 years old rn and some of those go back to the infamous v27 update that bricked a lot of those headsets, that is not my case because I installed the latest version that supposedly doesn't have those problems anymore.

Hey! Sounds like this could be related to a cable issue, I experienced the same symptoms before with my secondhand Rift S and it ended up just being a worn-out cable. 😣 I'd say reach out to @MetaQuestSupport via PMs or submit a support ticket by going here. I feel like they'll definitely want to get a closer look at your logs before determining that, but they can definitely help you out further. 🙂

Hey there @AngeloT2001, we see you are having issues with you Rift S. We understand how troublesome this may be, but let's see what we can do to help! We noticed you read through a lot of different post, but can you list what you have tried to resolve this issue please? It'll help us know what steps to try, and what steps to not repeat.

For now, we start by seeing if the following steps help:

  • Reseat USB cable from the PC
  • Reseat cable from the headset
  • Reboot the PC
  • Open device manager
    1. Go to Universal serial bus controllers
    2. Uninstall/remove the Rift S sensor items listed.
    3. Once removed; click scan for hardware changes at the top of device manager and wait a few minutes for the items removed to come back.

Lets us know how this goes and please provide the actions you have taken so far. Hope to hear from you soon!

So yeah, this post got marked as solved because I bought a rift s headset replacement on ebay that for some reason are cheaper than the cable (I thought it was going to be the other way around but oh well) to test if it was a cable or headset problem and yeah, its the cable that broke, I would love that meta just released the schematics for the cable so 3rd party options exists and we don't need to buy overpriced replacement cables on ebay.
