serious jitters of ASW after updating win10 creator update or Nvidia driver (partly solved)

Hey everyone , my system is i7 6700 16g ram gtx1070, oculus app version 1.20.0.49, graphic driver 385.69. It ran perfectly in project cars 2 (1.5ss, locked at 45fps with ASW activated) .Now I find updating windows 10 fall creator update or any new Nvidia driver(I tried several versions including 388.31) causes serious jitters after running project cars 2 and Assetto Corsa for a while with ASW activated. The jitters can be easily realized by moving head. And another interesting thing is when jittering begins the FPS showed in performance HUD of oculus tray tool also begin to jump between 40~60 compared with a steady 45 when ASW works well, but the FPS showed by software like Afterburner is a steady 45 at the same time! And there is no throttling of CPU or GPU when jittering begins.

ASW can work again after rolling back, but it's not a proper solution, I hope anyone can give me any ideas about coping with this issue.

After a entire-night test I found the reason for this problem (under NV driver 390.65). The truth is the weird low priority of the process "OculusClient.exe". To be specific, when you open Oculus Home three
"OculusClient.exe" also start at the same time, you can check them in Windows taskmgr. And one of the three processes has "low" priority, set the priority to "normal" then FPS in game keeps 45 steadily. But every time you open Oculus Home you have to set the priority again, Still I don't find a solution once for all yet. And I also don't understand why new Nvidia drivers can cause the priority issue, the two things seem irrelevant.

Hope some official stuff of Oculus can notice this issue and solve it in next update.

Probably the best is to return to 385.69 drivers.

I am also getting this weird graphical anomaly where the image jumps up & down or side to side, quickly like a stutter and this happened since the creators update. It is really annoying and makes VR unusable. Happens with both the latest 388.31 as well as the 385.69 drivers which I just reverted to.  May just try few other drivers and see if makes an improvement but my guess is there is a serious problem in the fall update that was never properly tested in VR.

Yeah I'm still having issues as well. The Oculus updates that were released over the weekend didn't change a thing either. I don't get why some people get these issues and some don't. I've double checked everything in my PC and there are no background programs that should cause an issue, and all my usb power settings are off, and tried a bunch of Nvidia drivers after using DDU Cleaner in safe mode but nothing really changes these pockets of judder and stutter. If it is an issue with the fall Windows Update then why doesn't it affect more people, or is it a certain combo of components in the PC? I just wish we could get an answer.

You would think they would be jumping down the throats of MS or the Oculus Team to get them to fix this issue for us if it is caused by that. Especially since they are moving so many more Rifts with the price drop. Imagine the person who gets it for the Holidays and realises it performs like crap and thinks that's how it's supposed to be and is turned off by VR all together.. :'(. Not everyone that wants to own/play high end VR is a computer wizard so I feel the software needs to be more versatile to updates for every computer especially when they know a lot from the logs and videos sent. They see these issues exist.

I don't want to get my hopes up too much, but maybe the reason why they've been silent is because they may be about to issue a fix in the next big update with the new Home and Dash... Oh please I hope I'm right!! Proly not tho.....

A lot of us are keeping the original Creator update from installing because of the reported problems. Perhaps that is the reason for fewer reports afterwards!

A lot of us have tried everything including what is listed above. Power management check,  Rolling every driver back for Nvidia check, formatting PC about 10 times check,  no background monitoring software check, Reinstalling oculus software from scratch check. Yet results remain the same.

Another thing I don’t understand is if I use the oculus Beta it gives me different performance from the performance that the current update do so how does that make sense. I’m sorry but there’s something going on here and someone needs to fess up and fix it whether it be windows or oculus.  This is a good thing that a lot of posts are being put up about this because it showing that there is an issue somewhere and if more eyes see it because of all of the posts then that’s good for the people that are still having issues. If you don’t have issues great but some of us no matter what have still have had issues this entire time and have not had a chance to enjoy a rift in a very long time that we paid a lot of money for.

I don't have any stuttering problems at all except in the menu section of Onward, so I assume that's related to the app itself.  I don't run any programs like Afterburn, nothing to monitor any performance at all.  Windows automatically updates and my machine is practically on 24 hours a day.  I do not believe this is related to the Windows Update.  What I NEVER do is update my video drivers.  When Nvidia says there is a new driver, I NEVER update it.  When I updated as soon as the new drivers came out, it always broke the VR and NOTHING else, so I never updated unless I'm forced to or I can confirm the latest drivers work.  I never really bother to check though because I never notice a positive change in performance, so why even bother?  The result of my inaction on driver updates is a VR system that runs perfectly on a system that is old as dirt.

Go to this link at the bottom to bring you to this magical forum post.  Look at the comment from aisepos! His suggestion actually fixed everything. Oculus has never suggested this but now they will. This man is a genius and he actually figured out why I was having my problems... all 6 months of them.  I can’t guarantee it’s a cure all but I hope this helps you too and give him a shout if you see him. He is a God!!!!

Thanks to everyone in their suggestions if they are reading this. I really appreciate all the help and working together to figure out these things for the community.

See you in the Rift!

I can confirm the same issue. I'm on Creator Update, using any of the nvidia 388.xx drivers give you this problem: Project Cars 2 start perfectly smooth but after some play, it loose ASW, make the image quality unplayable.
The issue is more immediate with high setting in SS.
One way to fix is to put off the HMD, and put on again, some time the ASW re get in sinc.

No issues so far with old driver 385.69....perfect with SS 1.5..Blame on you, nvidia!
