v46 frame drops/stutters/headroom dips

Edit: For anyone stopping by looking for a solution, there isn't going to be one. This issue is falling on deaf ears by meta staff. The issues described exist both in standalone and pcvr link/airlink. It seems to be widespread, possibly most or all quest 2 devices, yet it's been relayed that it's only a small subset of users experiencing the issue... sure. That's definitely why we can totally troubleshoot and fix it /s

The only remedy is going to be through an update issued by meta. I/You/We have done all the troubleshooting and bug hunting possible, all signs point to them. Good luck everyone!

...

Frame drops, reprojection (even with ASW set to Off), stuttering, performance degradation, and gpu headroom dipping to 0 or even negative has been since v44, and now v46 as well. I have come across this issue in many different posts here in the meta forums, elsewhere as well, and no one has come to any conclusions other than this HAS to be an issue with oculus software itself. Witnessing OVR errors and socket errors amongst others in the console logs and no previous fix is capable of providing any remedy to the current issue. I have tried all previous working drivers from nvidia, uninstalling with DDU and reinstalling old to new. No change. HAGS set to off, clean installed oculus based off of official support techniques (safe mode and manual folder deletion), toggled and focused console window, set high priority on ovrserverx64 and game running, disabled link sharpening, disabled mobile ASW, reset all graphic settings to default, set vsync to off in nvidia control panel, reset nvidia control panel, nothing. These issues stem directly from the oculus software and there's no chance of user error. For those hoping to chime in about windows update breaking the software, that is also untrue. I have now tried windows 10 on updates 20h1, 20h2, 21h1, 21h2, and 22h2 and this issue is present across all of them. I also tried on windows 11 builds 21h2 and 22h2 and the same issue persists. We desperately need a community update from @Ryanality as i know im not the first to raise this issue. I wish i could say it was just user error, machine setup etc. There are multiple internal errors displayed in the console window and i've submitted these logs with the support team as have the others experiencing this issue. It would be great if we could PLEASE get a public update regarding this issue. I have been troubleshooting this for several weeks straight.. i'm going absolutely mad. PLEASE HELP US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Basic troubleshooting, clean installs, NONE OF IT WORKS! 2 years of using this headset and software...and this is the worst its been by far! 😧

Hello! I recently had to replace my quest 3 (return to store since it had dead pixels) just started using my new one. On this device I've noticed the menus jitter a lot more than the other one when moving my head. I tried to capture the behavior using the screen capture feature but when that's turned on the jitters stop. I've tried a factory reset as well as a hard reboot to no avail. I've checked for updates and I'm using the latest...should I return this device? Not sure what else to do...

Hello,

I have the same behaviour.

In quest home, I have a lot of jitter and nothing is really smooth. I tried 120Hz and not 120Hz mode.

In game, every 30-40 secs I have also jittery or frame drop.

I tried a factory reset, nothing changed.

I am thinking about returning it too, that's a shame, I love the optics so much.

I also have this flickering/jitter in the home menu of the Quest 3 when moving sideways. VR and AR. Sometimes I also recognize it in standalone and PCVR apps. 90Hz and 120Hz.

I bought a second Quest 3 and it's exactly the same!

And when I start the recording mode of the built-in camera app, it always disappears almost 100% during recording.

This is one of many bugs I've noticed in quest 3 since I bought it a month ago. I'm starting to get the feeling that the thing is absolute garbage. Or rather, it seems as if there are constantly new major bugs in the meta software, some of which are not even fixed. I've spent the last two weeks browsing through many reddit and meta forums threads and was a bit shocked by all the bugs. And I'm aware of most of them. Above all, the bad wifi firmware/software and the associated bad pcvr.

QUEST PRO headset. This was introduced in v59. I already had issues with controllers freezing on v57 (again, the same ones we had in v53/54 that got fixed in v56). On v59 controllers freeze even more but now additionally after 30 - 40 minutes of playing the image stutters as if I were sitting on a massage chair. It's unplayable. I have to restart my headset to fix it but then controller freezing gets worse. I use WiFi 6E with router 1,5m in front of me in same well lit room. Nothing has changed on my setup or environment. Those problems arised right after v57 and now v59 firmware updates.

It's not the first time controller freezing happened. It's also not the first time there is some weird lag happening. v54 had an issue where slight head movement would cause massive lag of the image and it was fixed with sub patch of v54 at some point. Now it's stuttering/vibration of the image. All other wifis I have are completely switched off. I have a clear line of sight to ASUS AXE 11000. No amount of different settings change anything. Not like it would. It's clearly the firmware that did it - AGAIN.

@support
Will the problem with the stuttering when moving sideways be fixed or will we have to send in or return our Quest 3?
I have 13 other people in my discord who have written to the support but have not heard back.
What's the next step?

There are  number of posts now regarding stuttering on the home screen (sometimes in game too) when moving your head laterally and moving into towards the menu.

Users have replaced headsets only to find the issue still exists.

There's currently only one way to fix it, record video... yes you heard that right. If you record video the framerate flattens and you no longer get the stuttering.

I've been using a third party app to test different framerates, resolutions, CPU and GPU levels, and FOV. Nothing changes it. Even lowering to res, setting GPU and CPU to max, the stutters STILL occur.

Using OVR, you can see the FPS graph isn't flat, also the stale frame counter counts up when ever the stutters occur.

Look at the FPS graph, all I'm doing is moving my head around the menu.

I've tried a factory reset, turning off guardian, turning off hand tracking, changing the tracking frequency. My headset is on v59.

  • Many Reddit posts reporting the same issue
  • Posts here
  • Exchanging headsets doesn't make it go away
  • Recording video inside the headset fixes the inconsistent frame rate
  • NO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FROM META

I'm in two minds whether to return the headset and wait 6 months before purchasing another.

I've just created a new post about this with a FPS graph showing the issue. This is beyond frustrating. There's a number of people complaining about this on Reddit yet nothing from Meta

Hi @TheodonKhel

I personally would use Wi-Fi 5 rather than 6e. Streaming VR doesn't saturate the bandwidth at 5ghz, 6e currently doesn't make much of a difference and It does seem to cause a few problems with the Quest.

Another tip would be to disable 160mhz on your router too, so you are mainly using the 80hz band, that will increase reliability for 5ghz further.

Hope this helps

No dude it doesn't help because 3 neighbours in apartments around me have 5GHz WiFis on 36-48 non DFS channels. I have too much interference to use 5GHz. DFS channels even though they are empty they don't work well with Quest Pro. Never did. WiFi 6E is the only thing that gave me solid and good experience. It's been over half a year if not more that WiFi 6E is officially supported on Quest Pro. They got it right in v56 final version firmware. It was working. But they changed WiFi drivers again and messed everything up. I paid 1200 euro for a device that only worked 3 months out of 8 that I own it. There is no excuse.
