As the number of people with rift s, quest 1 and older systems run into breaks and problems, make the controllers for the new system backwards compatible. It could probably be as simple as a firmware update to allow either the controller or the had to connect to each other. As for the link cable maintain the option to purchase link cables and maybe offer an adapter to connect the headset to the USB and displayport for the rift s or older models instead of killing off the support. By removing both of these you are showing prior customers and customers looking into your product that you dont plan to support the next generation either. This could potentially hurt the company in the long run if support is dropped almost instantly. Also if support is dropped and multiple companies enter the market and have better support and are more reliable are they going to want your product with a poor support track record? Most likely not. Also the number of rift s users on steam alone is the third highest with 13% and the only reason that number has dropped is because of the lack of support for the hmd. From what I have found due to steam offering rma and support well beyond the original warranty period many have switched there for pcvr rather than buy a new oculus or meta unit. My recommendation is to allow backwards compatibility with the touch and pro controllers and even if not making it yourself, Source a 3rd party link cable or adapter. That will allow a stronger customer base and backing than currently is available and the possible future repercussions as the forums here alone are loaded with people upset that there is no support for the older VR systems.

Update 12-17-2022

John Carmack the CTO of ar/vr has left meta. He states, that people don't want to break out there headset to show off and "Make better decisions and fill your products with 'Give a **bleep**!" He also made mention of people inside meta not using quest 2 hmds due to reliability issues. All the more reason to maintain products for longer or potentially losing out on more.
