Hi All!

Per https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Ideas/Disable-Boundary-in-Quest-3/idi-p/1175279, at the moment the guardian system limits user behaviors and there is no way to turn it off. I think it's thus more appropriate to name it "Helicopter Parent" instead, this have the following benefits:

  • Clear Communication: Renaming the system to "Helicopter Parent" instantly communicates its purpose of safeguarding users within the virtual environment. Users will understand its role in guiding, protecting, restricting, and limiting their interactions.
  • Expectation Management: The term "Helicopter Parent" inherently implies a level of oversight and restriction, managing user expectations effectively. Users will anticipate limitations, reducing frustration when encountering boundaries within the VR experience.

  • User Acceptance: By explicitly labeling the system as a "Helicopter Parent," users are more likely to accept its constraints as necessary for their safety and overall experience. This can mitigate feelings of anger or resentment when behaviors are restricted.

  • Fostering Trust: Clarity in naming fosters trust between users and the system. Users appreciate transparency and are more likely to trust a system that openly communicates its intentions.
  • Consistency with Cultural Understanding: "Helicopter Parent" is a widely recognized term in contemporary culture, aligning with users' existing understanding of overprotective supervision. This familiarity enhances user comprehension and acceptance of the system's role.

In general, renaming the "Guardian System" to "Helicopter Parent" not only clarifies its purpose but also enhances user experience by managing expectations and fostering trust. This small adjustment can significantly improve the overall perception and acceptance of the system within the Meta Quest 3 community.

Allan Windmill
