Week 4: Moki's Adventures

Hi Everybody!

First of all I just want to say how inspiring it is to pop into the forum! You guys just rock!!!! I love seeing the progress and developments and hope everyone is feeling the joy of 'strength in numbers' as I am.

So it's that time for my update! You can also get a more in-depth version on my blog here: http://www.bananafrog.co/launch-pad/

Challenges
The plan was to focus entirely on learning Unity 3D for VR, and I got about 30% through when I realized I was struggling to obtain a deeper understanding of the instruction. So I started to look for more fundamental tutorials on programming. In the end I felt like I was on a wild goose chase and shared a picture of the rathole on our FB page.

I can't tell you how touched I was to get support and help from folks who've been there. Thank you Amy, Alejandro, Dorian, Aliah, Liv and Trisha!

Process
So my husband, aka programmer in the house, offered to give a "The fundamentals of programming" in 20 minutes – needless to say it was brief, but good- I think, I mean I wouldn't know yet right! (I posted video clips on the blog version of my update if your curious.)

We worked through how I should proceed with my tutoring and agreed to start with Dorian's suggestion with the Roll-a-ball tutorial on Unity's site which teaches you the principles of game development.

Success
Success is funny, I think sometimes it's glaringly obvious and other times we get caught up and miss it. My big success this week was getting my husband to sit down and really take the time to walk me through programming. This is big! We've always been the Designer and Engineer and rarely have crossed over into each other's work areas. Odd I know, but it's just been a pattern. This week was a MAJOR break through which I want to celebrate and respect. Hopefully this is the beginning of an even more beautiful relationship 😉

Next steps – Week 5, 6 & 7
My family vacation starts this Saturday - it's Swedish Mid-Summer and we basically celebrate summer now! So we'll be in Monterey and kids will be at the Acquarium or at the Acquarium's summer camp. I am hoping to gather more inspiration as to the "nature" aspect of Moki's adventures, get time to sketch and write around the story and hopefully get time to continue my tutorials.

Come the first week in July, I plan on continuing my primary focus on learning C# and the principle of object oriented programming.
