Hello, everyone. I'm Charlotte M. Ellett. I've previously worked on 2D games (such as http://pixel.game -- one that is 100% independently made by my team with our own engine) and added VR support to them with the Oculus Rift DK1.
Here's my first blog post. I had some issues with getting access to the forum and so had an extended deadline, and I ended up taking until the end of the deadline to write it because I had some personal issues this week and I didn't want to write while angry. Thanks for your patience on that!
The rough days are unrelated to the VR project. I'm persevering and very excited to develop this game for OLP 2018! I've spent the time since our meetup at Facebook getting to know and love the Oculus Rift, and setting up the best possible space that I can for working with it. I'm in the middle of putting together a new studio that will be VR friendly and easier to work in, as my old space was not.
As I mentioned above, I've only had a DK1 before, so this was a huge step up for me in ability to work with the Rift, and first time owning the Touch controllers. These are going to be integral to the experience that I'm working on. As some of you have heard me talk about in our in-person or online pitch sessions, I'm working on a creative game/experience involving using motion to create things in the void of space.
One of the other exciting developments for me this week is that I received an invitation to GopherCon UK! This will be my first time visiting the UK. I actually first acquired my passport back when I was in school for a trip to the UK, but it was cancelled by the school. It's nice to use it for its intended purpose before it expires. It'll be a great opportunity to see old friends and network with new people in the Golang community. I originally got into learning about Golang because of my interest in Kubernetes for game development backend work. In total, I've got three conventions that I'm planning to go for the rest of this year (including PAX West and Oculus Connect 5), which is going to make my schedule a little tighter, but I hope it'll be worth it.
Community building is important and that's part of why I love OLP 2018 and the opportunity to work with everyone here. I also took time to read over many of the other blog posts here and it's amazing to be part of this group.
Here's what's coming up for me, and where I'd like help from the rest of the community:
I'm feeling frustrated about the business and team building aspects of getting a new venture going for VR. This is an area where I've struggled some in the past, and I would appreciate whatever insights or advice that the group can give.
I'm working on improving as a VR designer and coder specifically. I've been doing some reading on the general ideas and design principles of VR. If anyone has some recommended works there or about developing in VR, I'd appreciate that!
I dove into learning Unreal Engine for this project, and am so far enjoying the workflow so much that it's hard to pull myself away from it sometimes. I anticipate this being great for my game. We'll see when I get into developing some prototypes, which I hope will be soon. I have another blog post coming up shortly, where maybe I'll share some stuff that I'm creating if it looks good.
I'm going to include some photos of how my studio setup is going so far. You can see the CBO and CMO supervising the process of moving into a new space and acquiring and setting up the office furniture, as well as the Train Computer getting a temporary new home until the next booth at a convention.
