This past week has been good. Nathalie's lectures are great. They are simple and super informative! This week I will be shooting some scenes with the help of Jonathan Williams from last year's OLP to figure out the right camera and lighting for a potluck table with food. I am also currently producing a 2D short film about a Bosnian math club that escaped during the war to compete in the Olympiad in Canada. It's shooting this week and I will be shooting scenes in 360 to figure out how to do "flashbacks" and memories in 360. So this past week was mainly spent setting appointments with local community organizations that focus on food and connecting community, storyboarding, interviewing more immigrants to hear stories. One important thing Nathalie mentioned was to find someone who is charismatic for the camera, and that takes talking to quite a few before finding the right one.

Aloha everyone! For this week's update, I've been tinkering with the VR game making tutorials and online classes, modeling, designing, and tinkering with different aspects of possible interactions I can implement in the VR. It's still in the baby steps but hopefully I can show something more concrete in the coming weeks. I also met with a programmer, 2 other animators, and a fine artist to talk about the possibilities and ideas for VR. The concept so far is deeply rooted in love. The fine artist and experimental animator I met with, Bertha Aguilar, we talked about the importance of interactivity of the experience. We'll be having few more meetings to discuss it further and how we can push the medium through art. It's a bit nebulous but I'll be working on it more this week.

Hope everyone have a wonderful week!

Updates from PlaceXR ::
This past week has been great and full of prototyping.  I've been working on setting up / side-loading my Oculus Go Unity project and have been really happy with how it's going. Also been delving a bit into Unity's authoring tools to see if we can incorporate them into our prototype. Some of the developers on the team have been working on our database component and the overall application architecture. So fun and more to come in the next few weeks!!

Aloha kākou,

Down with a post-game workshop flu, so Iʻll post about the sand shark in the game next week when I am a bit more clear-headed. The Kānaka Maoli video game worked and looked beautiful - even before polishing.  The participants were pleased, and it gave me a lot to think about for my VR project, which I can now delve into more fully!  Bonus from last week - I got to meet Nak again, he came to the launch event.  Mahalo nui e Nak for coming and the lei!

Re: my VR project - Iʻve got meeting with my team this coming week to map out the demo steps and completion timeline, concept art is in-progress.  Sound and music will come soon, as will the chant.  With the sound and singing, I know there are things I am not noting/articulating fully -  the music coaching session will really be useful today.

OK - back to bed with miso and flu meds - have a great week everyone!

Last week I set up the raycast toolkit to make strange, chaotic landscapes using signed distance functions. This week I wanted to look into how to shade them in interesting/useful ways. The main difficulty here is the builtin shader has a particular lighting function-- lighting is applied, material is applied, an ambient occlusion pass is applied-- and this is hardcoded. The builtin functionality lets you script the material color, but the "realistic" lighting pipeline is always applied on top of this, so any hope at doing something like cel shading is excluded.

I pestered the creators of the raycast toolkit and it turns out there *was* a way to fully define the shading function, it just wasn't documented. They added those instructions to the documentation and I was able to make the thing I wanted: An edge shader, where the shade is a simple color plus a combination of the ray vector and the surface normal. As you move around objects, the edges (facing "sideways" relative to your eye) are always dark, and the parts you view head-on are always light.

This gets me closer to my goal of making shapes that look like dripping paint with a sort of shiny gloss on them.

Next goal is probably to figure out how to extract Z-buffer information from the raycast so I can detect if the headset has collided with an object surface.

Music (designing levels)

(July 14-July 19)
I have a working mechanic but I’m currently stuck on designing it so that it matches the tone. So far everything feels like everything will be combat based or that it will lack the emotional aspect I am looking for. I kinda feel stuck, I am currently stuck on figuring out to design the experience.

I was looking through Premium Beats for a music I can design the level around. Browsing through song help me define the feeling and tone that I did not want through the process of eliminating, as well find music that resonated with me.  I find the song called Glass Heart from PremiumBeat, I feel that it matches the tone of the experience, it contains loops so I'll try to conceptualize around it.

okay week 4. Still milling about. PW Book is almost complete. Thinking of Designs for the game in VR.... still haven't landed on anything, yet while I am writing this post there is a great deal of lightening awesome ideas running through my mind, they are just too fast to grab right now. I would imagine they will get tired and then slow down at some point, when that happens Ill grab one and let you know what comes to mind. -AnwarBey

Week 6

This week I began prototyping 3dof tools for the Go. I began with a saber, a wand, chopsticks, and a hammer. For my game, I want to break free of the typical controller with a laser pointer, so I am continuing these experiments until I get both a nice collection and a solution for my application.  Personally, I really enjoyed the hammer and the chopsticks. This week I am going to grow this tool kit and do some play testing to see what other find satisfying.
