This week I have pivoted and put full focus into METROPOLES.

Our developer from California was in New York to work with
my UX designer and I. It’s so rare to have a chance to work together in person,
so we started with a table session with paper and pens. Since we eliminated everything
in the system to begin the multiplayer network from scratch, we literally don’t
have the basics right now. Therefore, as we decide to reintegrate them we are
making very thoughtful decisions about every element. We blocked out
teleporting and strategized how we want it to work along with adding in
haptics.

I brought in some materials I’ve made to do paper testing! I’m
curious to see if by adding names to the buildings it will add an element of
decision-making to the game. I like the idea of doing this as a paper test
first, before we go through the design process and engineering. Sometimes even
when you are building a digital world in VR, it’s really fun to go back to a
sheet of colorful construction paper!

Project Title: Kitten Justice:

Type: VR Game

Genre: Comedy/Sci-Fi

I'm working on slingshot design for the first level of the game. Meanwhile 3d modeller send me some screenshot of the progress 3d modelling Junk Ship, which will appear when the player will upgrade weapons. (will need to work on the details of the ship and pick up materials for it).

I will work on the design of the space ship's cockpit, which will in the game represent the menu. It will be necessary to think about where everything will be, so that the player can easily navigate. I plan to do a prototype and test it in the next 2 weeks

Some growing pains in development: I tweaked the vr  motion controller interface to add more functionalities towards the puzzle, it was painfully tedious and I realized a better mode of action is utilizing plugins in this case. Luckily there is an awesome plugin in the marketplace which is free and will save so much time.Including gesture control, and grab customization enabled (as in cool effects and possibly animations).

I'm working on making this a smooth integration with the current project. I may end up shifting what the exact puzzle mechanism will be as I'm really looking toward utilizing the Virtual Reality aspect for that full immersive feel.

Have a great week!

The timeline for my
original project idea to visit the Yawanawás in Brazilian Amazon has changed
again. I recently found out that the person connecting me with the tribe won’t
be able to meet with me in person because of changes in his already intense
schedule. This made my mid-point-check-in project ideas irrelevant. Result: no submission. I am now in
process of completely reformulating my ideas to make them feasible and responsibly
executed, respecting the Yawanawás culture. Being in Europe at the moment
doesn’t make things any easier to coordinate: I will therefore wait to work it
all out once I’m back in LA, from August 26th onward. The one thing
I’m looking forward to is experimenting with my Rylo 360 camera in the next few
days.

Project Locomoto Development Blog #8:
Spline Refactor

Hello Launchpad,

After a long refactoring process with a lot of headache, I finally reworked the entire music line system for Cosmonote to be spline based! This effort has given this project a much firmer base from which to expand on, while also giving it a nice breathe of stylistic flair. Here's a brief video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unnRjLwxXAk

As usual, information on my thought process in doing this refactor can be found on my medium blog here: https://medium.com/@projectlocomoto/developer-blog-8-splines-e8b47deb16ca

See you all next week,

Charles Niu

Aloha everyone! ❤️ hope you are all doing well!

Worked on quill designing some elements and learning how to configure it to Quill. Currently working on the could with "VR my life" concept, exploring deeper level of storytelling through the medium.

It's been a bit tricky trying to make quill work with unity but slowly testing different elements to put things together.

Working on two designs of the beasts, and working on the story elements further as well.

Week 7

After the midpoint check-in, I talked at the NYC Unity Developer Group about my personal pet peeves in mobile VR, how to design for the Oculus Go and some tools I use for prototyping applications. It was so much fun! I got a chance to articulate my thoughts on a topic I am passionate about to a group of equally passionate developers! Please feel free to look through my slides, and let me know what you think! Check them out here: cierajones.com/go

In addition, I made a generic sample framework that has all the functionality needed to be published on the Oculus mobile marketplace. This has already made my life so much easier when prototyping. I can have an application that feels polished instantly because basic functionality is something I can just drop in.

That's it for this week! Thanks for reading 🙂

OLP Week 7 Update

Project: Atlas

I had a baby boy!! We're so happy, spent almost a week in NICU and we've finally emerged. I wasn't able to submit my Midpoint Report so I'll be doing that this week, even if I'm not eligible for the audio lottery with Niko.

Things I did:
  • Recruited one additional developer
  • Worked on visuals/level design
  • Contacted Nvidia & IBM about potential grants, sponsorship, support
  • Organized and hosted the biggest VR Arcade tournament EVER, played competitive Beat Saber with over 160 VR arcades world wide, spanning 24 countries, it was a super messy success 🙂 Here's some press on that: https://vrscout.com/news/beat-saber-largest-vr-arcade-event/
What I'm doing this week:
  • Finish midpoint report & budget
  • Follow-up with Nvidia & IBM
  • Doing more level design
  • Work more on IBM Watson voice recognition implementation
Challenges:
  • IBM Watson is driving me bananas getting it to work, such cool potential, so many Unity issues
  • Broad focus across projects is hurting my progress
  • Need to rework my schedule to carve out sufficient time for OLP

OLP18: Week 7
Project Title:
Adventures of PICL Jones
Type: VR Game
Genre: Comedy/Adventure,
Sci-Fi/Western

Midpoint check in submitted! I had to pull over and
send it from the parking lot of Cash Magic, a gas station/casino deep in Louisiana,
but I got it done.

While on the road I was in communication with my team and keeping up on the art
that’s being produced.  We have new WIP
for our character Gwen. She’s a reformed thief and now serves as assistant to a
wealthy Alien entrepreneur.

Concept art of the ship interior is continuing. We’ve made
a few changes along the way, and I’m pleased with the direction everything is going.

I start my new job at Idyllwild Arts Academy teaching VR/360 Film this week, so I'll be busy with many meetings, but we are continuing to work on the project. This week we are recording character dialogue with our actors, working on exporting the mocap data, continuing to model characters and beginning on the environment. The developer I had lined up fell through, so my biggest need right now is in that area. Now that I'm on the west coast I'll concentrate my search here. Keep Swimming!
