Project Title: Kitten Justice

Type: VR Game

Genre: Comedy/Sci-Fi

Hello everyone!

I had very productive weekend, continued working on the 3d assets, especially focused on designing a slingshot for the first level of the game. The design took longer than I planned, but I'm happy with the results. The next step will be UV and add textures. Here’s a video of the 3d model.

At the moment I need to speed up with the development of the prototype to make in a playable state and test with users. For the prototype I plan to do a quack tutorial how to use different weapons (2 min) and two levels of play for 3 minutes each.

See you next week!  🙂

Aloha kåkou,

A bit behind due to Hurricane Lane* slooooowly making it's way past the Hawaiian islands - there were days of preparation and three days of hunkering down/waiting/power outages and brown-outs.
Happily, I'm back at it starting tomorrow, pardon the short post this week.

Two main thoughts this week:
1. Looking forward to Oculus team feedback from the draft - our budget is tricky as much of it is programming heavy.
This is due to the decision to feature Indigenous AI that are unique in their relational approaches and meaning-making for each of the two options (Atlantic or Pacific).

2. Art is not coming along as fast as I'd hoped - will be ramping that up this week/bringing in other talented 2D artists as needed.

Have a great week everyone!

*O'ahu was lucky, we were spared the flooding, wind damage and fires that other islands experienced.

Hope everyone had a great week!

Launchpad updates--
This week I did my best to begin playing "Code Combat" so I can become a bit more familiar with basic coding knowledge so I can communicate more effectively with my CTO as we begin to build out the Unity portion of our prototype. I hope I can learn Unity one day, but for now, this is a good start.

Startup updates--
I'm currently working with schools to create after-school VR clubs for students. In my VR clubs, we go on 2 VR field trips each Friday while learning the basic of VR. Students will have an introduction to 360 filmmaking and an intro to coding & Unity.

Here are photos from last Friday with my VR club.

This week I was thinking through the interactions and detailed UI more thoroughly. I made more storyboards and we worked on the feeding mechanics and closet interactions, we as well plan to continue working on that this coming week. I was going to post a screenshot from the scene today but we got locked out from Mozilla where we work on the project, so Ii will just share few slides from my sketches and from the storyboard. Here are 4 pictures from the quick storyboard, combined (1. Top left, 2. Top right, 3. Bottom left, 4. Bottom right). I use a tablet for the sketches and notes, so the screens go one by one, and here I just share an example.

I also finished a mood board for the second type of dogs that I use as inspiration. I also sorted out my findings from reviews so I can use them in my final pitch deck. Continue working on the prototypes with VRTK.

WEEK 8 (8/20-8/27)

Engineering

  • Completed puzzle mechanics for SC02: Cubic Puzzle

  • Added swimming mechanics for SC03: Aqua Jungle

  • Added underwater visuals for SC03: Aqua Jungle

  • Added ambient sound

  • Added footstep soundFX for Mil

  • Added walk cycle, idle, swim cycle, swimming idle animations for Mil

  • Added Fish AI character for SC03: Aqua Jungle

Art

  • Designed street signs for SC04: Rainy Lands

  • Modeled buildings for SC04: Rainy Lands

  • Completed Kelp model for SC03: Aqua Jungle

  • Started modeling Admin

This week, we’ve made a lot of progress on the engineering side. I’ve completed the first puzzle in SC02: Cubic Puzzle and started working on the puzzle mechanics for SC03: Aqua Jungle. To start working on the puzzle mechanics in SC03, I added swimming mechanics, underwater visuals, and a Fish AI character into the game. The Fish AI roams around a certain area and will try to avoid the player from approaching. In order to capture the fish, the player must activate FOCUS MODE, which slows down the environment, making it easier to catch the fish. For next week, I will start working on the mechanics for slowing down the environment, and adding a HUD to guide the players.

For the art, we’re almost done with creating the major components of the game, and we’re starting to add more details to the scenes. We’re trying to add more details such as street signs, plants, aquatic life, plants, etc. I’m also modeling the final character Admin, and will finish rigging by the end of next week.

This week has been a unique week filled with organization, research, and pre-production.

First, our research has been going well with the Theater and we're going to try a new more focused round of research. We'll also be launching a blog! I will post about that in the coming week.

Second, METROPOLES has needed some in-depth time to get sound working between players. We've had to go into some deep reading to get this right and still haven't found the solution. I wish there was more to write about this, but at times development is just not fast and one must have patience.

Third, we are planning for some new VR production! Standby!

Week 8 / Dev Blog Post

This week we focused
on tweaking, reworking and experimenting with the mechanics to get them just
right.

Our kids were especially helpful for getting feedback. Once they tried the prototype, they begged us to play it
every day…more than any other experience they have played in VR to date!

They're enthusiasm
is rewarding and motivating!

Week 8 - Mechanics

  • We continued work on our
    prototype, specifically mechanics

  • We focus on the small details
to achieve an overall better result

  • Added a few new models for
    visuals
  • User testing and
    feedback

Reach for the sky!

Projects: #Murder with Nir Netzer and facadeVR with Jasmine Roberts

Updates: I missed a post last week as I was moving overseas with my two cats... it was quite an adventure. I have finally settled in my new home in Holland and look forward to starting the PhD program next week. It was a really difficult decision not to pack my Go, but I'll be back home soon to retrieve it. Mindlabs and the DAF Technology Lab that I'll be a part of will have a number of mixed and virtual reality devices, so I'm looking forward to expanding my repertoire.

I'm thrilled that filming for #Murder will begin next week as well. The set looks amazing and Nir is so talented, I can't wait to see it come alive. He had an absolutely brilliant idea to secure a shooting location and I'm completely blown away by the result. Sometimes it just takes a little elbow grease and a lot of ingenuity, and Nir always delivers.

Progress on facadeVR has been great as well. Jasmine has a really solid plan and I'm impressed with the aesthetics and gameplay.

Have to run.. tot ziens!
