I have just arrived
back to LA after an unexpectedly prolonged journey because of the Swiss Air
flight cancellation in Venice, Italy. After finally landing on an Air France
flight to Paris - LA, where they still serve awesome wine with their food, it
took us 14 hours (instead of 12) to cross the Atlantic. I’ve never had such an
intense experience of flying back in time, and the shifting of mental frames
from European to American. The power of the different landscapes, their smells,
sounds, looks, and vibes really hit home in an unexpectedly renewed sense of
how incredibly powerful the changes VR is bringing to our experiential field
really are. I’m deeply determined to make my Amazon Medicine Garden project
happen one way or another. While researching other options to get it off the
ground, I’ve found some other potential contacts that will help me with
necessary materials to take it in a constructive direction. My plane is to
mobilize all my contacts and set up meetings to explore my options this week. I
am excited and hopeful I’ll be able to make more significant progress towards
materializing a concrete project proposal within next couple of weeks.

A brief, but memorable time on the Adriatic sea in Croatia.

I had been out of town for 2 days of this week, recovering for another 2 days, so was pretty exhausted and wasn't sure if I would have much to show in time for this post--but will take a stab anyway on some of the work. I'd like to be farther along, but that's really just me sitting down and finishing all my own code/technical contributions (minus AI which comes later) and making sure every step integrating with each member of my team, our code doesn't break! Even folks sending samples (I realize not pushing to GH or using other Unity ways to share info, we are still prone to errors so I couldn't view the water transition scene that Angelo sent me last night, that I tried to open this morning).

1) Product/Project Management Update - Information Architecture/SiteMap and Overall Storyboarding

Outside of the updates below, I created another PM system for to-do lists and each time I think I'm done, we keep adding something (which I'm trying to avoid), but realize I forgot another thing, so that our meetings in-person or via G+ will be shorter and more efficient for stand-up to see what's missing/outstanding, and what we already accomplished.

I project managed the team on an update call this weekend as well and realized I needed to go over information architecture/sitemap one more time even though I referenced what I went over last week (for landing page), so I just made this to be more explicit. See below of what I just sent over to my team again to reiterate the title sequence being used for both parts of the landing page as well as story and how everything connects together, each section of the app: Learn, Story, and Share.

LEARN
The tutorial piece for "LEARN" section is the marketing video that will help generate more traffic to our downloads.

Working on adding 3D text and then also the actual thing working rather than me just dropping in some fbx files of the script itself, but the prototype is what I want to have working well to generate the 3D character of maganda (beautiful/woman character) and malakas (strong/man character) this week so all of it is integrated well between learn-story-share (story is watch or interact, trying to come up with a better word for this since it's an interactive storytelling experience/education app).

SHARE
The share piece also helps with this as well, to showcase what 3D content is created in this app that can take advantage of the central offering for Facebook's social content that can allow folks to share word creations made in BaybayinVR as well as experimenting with the Facebook Live/Oculus Spaces featured we discussed in our team prior so that Kristian could teach a class of students of multiple people and edit their work within our app synced with other apps (for those that do not have Rift) with our AR enabled features so that more people can learn and participate in immersive tech and learn Baybayin and Tagalog to English translations.

STORY
The storytelling piece itself is the heaviest out of the 3 given wireframing each piece, which while I've specialized in microinteraction to some degree before for web/mobile, taking it on for a more involved piece for each movement beyond rigging and other areas I've learned prior, was a lot to take in working with my 3D artist Angelo on the storyboarding the last few weeks, each time we revisited whiteboards and spreadsheets and SketchboxVR prototypes.

3) Technical Update
Controller Work and Transitions
I've been in the weeds with VRTK and STEAMVR (understanding every single difference of the documentation and even writing almost what would be documentation of my friend Vasanth (O'Reilly book co-editor) and FusedVR founder, Fuseman who wrote and created the popular "How to Mmake Tiltbrush from Scratch," to really make sure line by line everything makes sense for our controller, swapping out object grabs with our paintbrush and that at each step (adding on sound, adding on other fancy glowing animation for letters for each one, to word to 3D character representing that word's meaning) does not break in our entire workflow.

I'm still wrestling with animation transitions from the letters/characters to the 3D characters (and their movement respectively) that other developers and animators on our team will handle as we integrate the whole app since there's a lot of moving pieces.

Cross platform development
Since we already know our experience works well in Rift and ARKit, I'm syncing later this week with the whole team for making everything more integrated on the cross platform-end to have our team test in Oculus Go, and Android since we did not get to do this the other week.

Data capture
I will be searching more with my other friends from Facebook Applied ML team (reaching out to folks this week once some more of my controller is polished with art and also working with other team members to ensure cross platform development is solid). I'm hoping to locate additional experts who can help advise me on making sure data capture makes sense for being statistically significant to some degree. While not as rich in datasets as Chinese, Japanese as mentioned in the previous post referencing Yann LeCun's more recent work, a simple NLP word embedding or auto-draw/auto-ML type of algorithm I believe is possible to apply create novel ML and AI techniques with our user generated data after the app is officially launched.

4) Creative Update
We went over stylistic choices of having what type of UI since this type of brush was more modern:

In reality (back in the day as in the ancient times of the Philippines, or dawn of humankind), we imagined that the paintbrush would be far simpler, so had done a bit more research for Pinterest pinning/Purple imports of our inspiration.

We discussed our UX choices of types of paintbrushes or knives with bamboo, color, size that would be distinct from the split bamboo object in the main story scenes of the app to make it distinct from the controller. Having the user grab a paintbrush that looks as close or similar to what was used/is used to do Baybayin is similar to other Asian calligraphy though is still distinct than other East Asian cultures.

Aloha everyone! Hope you're all having a wonderful Monday!

I've been finicking with the technical aspects of bringing quill and unity together. It's a lot tougher than I anticipated but I'm enjoying every moment.

The project is going with great feedback from my peers, the concept and the story is well received. I'm continuing to animate and work on controls. At this moment this may have to be an experience and not as interactive as I wanted it to be.

Have a wonderful week everyone!

OLP18: Week 8
Project Title:Tropical Reality

Type: Experience / Adventure game
Genre: Comedy/Adventure, Culture
Team: Francis, Jennie, Guillermo, Marlon, Adriana

We've got music! The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of learning and moving parts. As we move into the month of September, we begin to close in on our prototype assets, and move on to a Unity sprint. We're excited to be working with Sotomayor from Mexico City. This is a band with a huge following in Mexico and a growing fanbase in the U.S. I first met them years ago and since have worked with them on festival tours with Bjork, MIA, James Blake, and Simpson Ahuevo. We will be getting base stems from their music and additional elements for us to score this adventure experience. Stay tuned!

Our goal with this project is to EXPAND VR to Latin American audiences, a sleeping giant in terms of audience development for VR. This project is very FUBU...

This has definitely been an "off" week. While working on one of the realms of the project it's kind of come to a halt on the others. Hopefully hearing feedback will help start up the engine again so I can get back out to filming. I fear that what I submitted may not be "enough", perhaps the feedback can also lend me direction on how to boost it. I'm excited for what I have now and my team is trying it's best working in 3 different states. I'm pushing myself and my abilities, my team is doing the same, which I am proud of. I can't wait to put all the pieces together and see the full project come together.

OLP18: Week 8
Project Title: EmpowHER VR
Type: VR Experience
Genre: Social Impact, Training

This past week was still spent recovering from a few setbacks from the previous week. However, I’ve been working with my 3D artist to make the assets less expensive and increase the FPS.

This week, I’ll be working on the following:

  • Create UI to begin each challenge where the player needs to select “Let’s Go” to start the challenge

  • Separate the scene where the perpetrator(s) moves toward the user from the situational awareness scene to its own called “Boundary Setting”

  • Create two UIs in the Voice module to show the phrases the player can use to make the perpetrator shrink or grow

  • Create UI for the transition between scenes

Also, as part of XR Studio, Sarah and I will be working on setting up an event surrounding self-defense where participants will learn a few basic self-defense moves and test out the app.

Cheers,
Neilda
