My App looks Terrible on the S7 but was fine on the S6? Gamma too bright or something?

Hi all,

I have held off from posting for a while as this issue bugged me so much I just quit developing my application 😞

I am the author of the YouTube Cinema app on the Sideload VR store. I developed the app as my first ever Unity application and think it turned out pretty well so far but still had a lot of work I wanted to do. I was orignally using the S6 Edge and the Gear VR innovator edition. Everything looked good!

Then I upgraded to an S7 edge and the consumer Gear VR. Now when I run the app, the lobby environment is fine as it is brightly lit. But the dark cinemas look absolutley Rubbish!! They are not dark anymore, the textures are all grey and completely washed out, it looks like it is being run in 256 colour mode. Instead of the textured fading into dark areas their are huge blotches of Grey bars etc.

I haven't changed anything in my app too make it look like this, its purely a difference between the S6 and S7.

I put a post on reddit and other people said they have noticed this in other apps also. Basically anything with dark environments,

Does anyone have any idea if there is something I can do to overcome this issue? Or is oculus going to fix it anytime soon so the S7 works the same as the S6?

I've not tried it for about a month so I guess I really should just in case a fix has already gone out but I has just completely lost interest in my project which is a shame since it has had over 15,000 downloads so far.

I just can't bring myself to use it knowing how good it used to look compared to now 😞

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Matt

Does indeed sound like a colorspace issue, although not sure what could be going wrong. Any chance you can post screenshots of the same scene on s6 vs s7? Because as far as I know I have not heard of any other apps hitting this.

Hi,
I seem to have a similar issue going from note 4 development to s7 edge with text. It looks like anti-aliasing is not working. Had a similar issue for the note 4 when setting in the Unity editor and had to  overwrite the setting in code which worked, however that does not work when building for the s7 edge. 5.3.4p1, utilities 1.3.0, ovr plugin 1.3.0.  Again, any help appreciated as I could not find anything in release notes.
Thanks, Glenn
