WHY does dev w/unity make random store games render stretched/distorted?

The view is stretched horizontally, so if you turn your head the image distorts in a sheer-effect.  Extremely nauseating.  It's like it thinks it's on a different phone and targeting the wrong render area.  I dunno if the img is actually squished - could be the effect of rendering to the wrong screen area, IDK.

The first time I ended up resetting my phone entirely.  Later I tried a barrage of things, and something along the line seemed to work. 
 I remember clearing storage for every service/app remotely related-looking to VR, oculus, Gear, turning off developer mode on the phone, rebooting...

If I want to do development with my Galaxy S8+ I constantly run into this situation.

Open to suggestions.
