My Oculus Medium feature requests.

Hi. I've been using medium for a couple months, and I've some suggestions.

1) "Move Tool" This would also be equivalent to a Z-brush style "Move Brush" or 3DSMAX style  "Soft Selection".
The purpose of this tool would be a non-destructive way to quickly change proportions of something: to be able to make a face fatter or thinner, taller or shorter, without having to just start over.

2) "Masks" This would be most like Z-Brush masks, but also similar to 3DSMAX sub-boject selections: essentially a way to temporarily disable a part of the object so that effects would be localized to a specific region.

3) "Translate". This would be similar to Z-Brush translation. This is sort of a companion feature to masks. Right now, if you wish you'd bent an arm at the elbow, you pretty much just erase it and draw a new arm. (I am aware that you can split something to a new layer and then translate that layer). Still, it'd be nice to be able to just translate or scale something without having to affect the whole layer.

4) "Preserve Color On Stamps". It would be great if a stamp could have a color associated with it. Say you're doing some dragon scale with a gradient texture across it, or a little tree... having the ability to bake colors into the stamp would make that feature much more powerful.

5) "Absolute Scale Stamps". I'd like the ability to have a stamp not scale with the scene scale, This would have the effect of scaling the stamp size inversely to the scene scale... i.e, if you scaled your scene down a lot, then the pending stamp would be much bigger in relation to the scene. I think this would be a great way to solve another criticism I have that stamp scales max out at too small a size. I was trying to do a little castle. So, I made a wall. I used that wall to make a house. I used that house to make a building... then I used that building to... shoot... my building stamp was stuck at the size of my house stamp.

6) "Faster color sample" I takes too long to select the eyedropper form the color palette. Maybe make it so that a long press on the color palette button goes into color sample mode.

Overall, I love medium, and I think it's close to finding a very meaningful place as the best way to sketch in 3D. The trouble is, for pre-vis work, you also need a way to make broad changes to something. For mocking up a basic form, Medium is already king. For setting up the basic components of a figure, a medium sculpt is better than Z-spheres or low poly modeling. The trouble is, as compared to Z-brush, even though it takes a bit longer to get to the basic shape, I can make broad changes incredibly quickly... make the legs longer, make the jaw wider, make the eyes further apart. The lack of this ability in Medium overshadows many of Medium's amazing advantages.

Anyway, love the program, can't wait to see what you do next.

Thanks
-Rory-

I absolutely agree that a Move function, and especially a Soft Selection Deform tool, would be tremendous improvements to Medium.

For quick access to the eyedropper, you can double click the colour button.

I'm only here to give you props for the animated gif as your avatar.  How'd you do it?

They used to be common in this forum, but I thought they stopped working when some of the format changes happened. @DaftnDirect's bobblehead used to bobble, for instance.

Hi Rory, some great suggestions, hope you don't mind me adding one to the list.

Like the smooth toggle, I'd love to see a negative option. Sculpting is all about adding and subtracting clay, and then smoothing out imperfections. As it stands right now, I find myself constantly opening settings to switch back and forth between these 2 actions, and thus greatly hindering the speed at which I can create in any other sculpting application.

Double click the Tool settings button to switch between add and subtract, for any tool that has two modes.   😉

Here's an old video of someone using nothing but a move tool and smooth in sculptris.

It really shows how powerful move is in comparison to all other tools.

Thanks nalex66, guess I missed that in the tutorials.

So after spending a couple of hours in various sculpts I also have a small list of features that I would like to see:
  1. A static pallette for storing colours that survives between projects (see Quill). Once I have the perfect skin colour I'd like to reuse it in other sculpts.
  2. A "fine" mode where my hand movements are scaled down. Right now for some fine translations or rotations my hands move to much to get it right. If these movements could be smoothed or scaled it would be great. I notice this when working with layers that hold different materials.
  3. An dynamic deforming tool. At the moment inflate/deflate it is much to quick and it always works directly on the surface, no matter how far away the tool is. I find myself instinctively moving the hand away from the surface to reduce the effect but it does not work like that. Instead you could mimic pressure by making the effect dynamic with the distance of the tool to the surface. That would give us a kind of virtual "thumb" to form the virtual clay.
  4. A lock function for translations and rotations. I would like to move or stamp objects only along one axis or rotate only around one axis at a time. The axis to lock and the mode (rotate/translate) could be defined in the layer selection mode.
  5. A lock mode for layers. So they cannot be moved or changed.
So please, Medium Santa, make my whishes come true

Masks please! totally agree, i've already had a few times where i have had to work in an very akward way because there is no lasso/pain mask.
