Paint Tool - Project Texture

Just started using this..but didn't find anything in search.

Can you use a texture to paint colors? (ie project texture to paint decal)

Also limit paint to front/surface? seems the brush radius paints the depth...so thin objects get painted on the back.

if not hope to see it in the future, painting solid colors is very limiting.

Welcome @dbaker! Medium uses vertex to paint colors - we don't currently have any way to paint with textures, or limit painting to a surface. We hear ya though on the desire for more painting functionality.

Hi,
First, cheer to your hard work and great software !
Secondly, to add to your very long list of feature requests, here are my few ideas for painting improvement :
  • dry brushing to paint only on creases ( and its opposite - inking - to paint only in grooves) some sort of conditional brush based on AO
  • add metalness & roughness & emisive per vertex (maybe as an option by layer so it doesn't increase memory consumption too much)
  • use PTex (similar to mudbox to be free from UVs) to allow texture projection.
  • Fill a layer with smart material, based on AO, curvature, and other noise map - similar to 3DCoat or SubtancePainer.
  • Linux support, ok that's not paint related and not up to you, but it's worth a trial  😛

Think outside the box. This is VR. Cavity paint is as simple as sticking your hand inside the model in brush mode.

As dbaker mentioned, sticking your hand into the model might be problematic when the model is too thin as the back get painted.
Dry brushing could solve that issue in some situations : for example when doing a cape or some other kind of drapery.
