You don't need the phone after the initial setup (other than for changing some settings), no login is needed to use the headset. It's worth noting though that although you don't need your phone to buy games, the headset will ask for your PIN before your can purchace... and it gives you the option to use your password instead of the PIN, so it's best not to pass on your login details if you want to be sure no purchases can be made.
