Can you cut the router out of the virtual desktop Equation?

Hey guys , just got my quest two and I want to try virtual desktop ! I have an ok router ( net gear nighthawk r7000) and an ok internet connection ( 300mps , about 250mps when checking speed test ) but I have a good motherboard with built in wave 2 WiFi ( arous master z390 ) so I’m wondering if it would be better to cut out the router and just stream from my pc right to the quest 2 in the next room ? Thinking since I’m not going to be playing online games why do I need the Internet after it hits the pc ? If I could just make the PC a hotspot or something ? Not completely knowledgeable on networking though so I defer to you, The experts ???

No you need to use the router, but the good news is your internet connection speed has nothing to do with it if you're not playing on line, as long as your router is up to it. I think your nighthawk is a duel band router with 5g.
It should be OK as is, but if you have issues, you may want to rename your 5G connection to something different to separate it from your legacy connection. That way you would be locked into your 5G instead of switching on you. I had to do that here.   https://kb.netgear.com/30231/How-to-change-your-NETGEAR-router-wireless-mode

Something to note is that you may need to change the wifi channel on your router to something higher.  5Ghz has channels between 36 and 48 then between 149 and 165; I wasn't able to get a fast connection until I changed the channel to the second three digit range.

That said I would love to see a way to directly connect the headset to your computer wirelessly.  Maybe some time in the future oculus will release some kind of wifi direct PCIe card or USB 3 dongle that's plug and play with oculus link.

You don't need the router if your computer has wifi.
You can create a wifi mobile hotspot in windows, then connect the Quest to that.
I just had Virtual Desktop streaming PC to Quest 2 with my router turned off to test it.

What kind of latency do you get compared to the recommended ethernet cable to a good router and the router 5Ghz wifi as close as possible, preferably in the same room?  Thanks.

My PC's wifi is only 2.4GHz, I use ethernet normally. So not a good test. I just wanted to point out that it does work. I haven't tried anything other than my desktop, I only bought Virtual Desktop last night and got it working today.

But assuming your PC's wifi doesn't suck, it should be less because you've just cut the network hops from 2 to 1 and removed the latency added by the router.

The Virtual Desktop dev doesn’t recommend the PC hotspot method—there were some hard limits to performance that he couldn’t overcome during his testing. I couldn’t tell you the exact issues, but he posted about it on Reddit a month or two back.

Maybe have a look over at the Virtual Desktop discord channel.  Not too many find PC hotspots work very well and certainly the VD developer does not recommend using them.

I don't know but I kinda doubt network hops have very much to do with it.  Good quality 5Ghz wifi close to your router seems to produce the least overall latency.  The latest VD update 1.18.2 now had a performance panel you can look at that now shows all latency and a breakdown of various sources of latency, including your network.

My PC has wifi-6, but it would require a certain order for it to connect at 1200Mbps. It was enable wifi, connect to 5Ghz router and then enable hotspot, reboot Quest2. However, possibly coincidence, after the v23 update, i could never connect at 1200Mbps. I did the VD update at the same time, but I am pretty sure VD has no control over the wifi connection speed. I had to go back to using Link which felt more like a ball and chain to be honest. Not sure how you manage the cable if you have the default head strap.

I then bought a wifi 6 router (ASUS RT-AX86U) and VD is back to 1200Mbps and latency is low. Low 20s on the desktop, and maybe 40 in a game using default settings.

Playing Audica:
My PC to router via ethernet, then 5GHz wifi to Quest 2: 50ms latency (VD overlay)
My Laptop running a 5GHz hotspot direct to Quest 2: 49-50ms latency.
(Both dropped to around 47ms at times, but the router one sat on 50 longer and the laptop hotspot sat on 49 longer)
